I have known some very healthy meat-eaters, and some unhealthy and fat vegetarians who eat too much junk food and sweets. Just because a food doesnt contain animal products doesnt mean it's healthy.
But overall, I would say vegetarians who eat the proper combinations of foods are probably healthier, less prone to heart disease and cancer than meat eaters. Vegetarians generally smell better too, because meat gives the body's odors a more pungent smell, the flatulence and feces smell worse. But some vegetarians who eat a lot of garlic and onion don't necessarily smell all that great either.

Vegetarians have lower incidences of cancer, and in general are healthier than non-vegetarians. They also have 4% lower serum cholesterol. Vegetarians are usually more health conscious than non-vegetarians, so that also influences the results.

Non-vegetarians can be just as healthy as vegetarians. Its really just about the right balance of foods.

Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray & Pizzorno) discusses the relative merits of vegetarian vs omnivore diets and concludes that the former seems to be better for most people if they do it carefully and thoughtfully.
