Type 2 diabetics also have to use insulin (eventually) once their pancreas wears out.

My Mother was a type 2 diabetic, I and my brother are type 1. It was sad to see her in so much pain from her legs, She never complained but the look on her face would tell you she was in lots of pain.
There was no internets or good books on diabetic care written back in the early '70 so research just was not done in a normal American household (well not in ours, anyway) She was busy raising us 11 kids! some already in the vietnam war at the time. (What stress was that???!)
Also there were no monitors back then just the pee strips!
She did her best to manage it but it took her from us anyway at age 57. That was over 20 years ago and Im still depressed over it.
Oh and she was put on insulin from the get go.
But as I said I am type 1 now with blindness, end stage renal failure & on dialysis & heart failure the most depressing thing about this dieases for both 1 & 2's is we won't be here to see our grandkids grow up to be adults.
Thanks for the memory lane......

The worst thing for me, having Type 2, is that I have to stay away from all of the foods that I love and crave; chocolate is a big one. The sugar free chocolate just isn't the same. Ok, perhaps that isn't the worst thing, but it is something that I miss. But I also live with the pain of Diabetes and the various problems that occur with it. I have Neuropathy in my legs and feet. I always said that I would be a terrible Diabetic patient. I was right. It is not a fun disease, to say the least.

The most depressing thing about type 2 diabetes is having to watch people suffer needlessly because they refuse to accept that they have the disease and, hence, don't do much about it and end up with complications as a result. My mother was an insulin dependent type 2 and died a slow miserable death because she didn't know how to take care of herself and/or refused to learn how. I'm a recent type 2, and, at first, was in total denial. Then I got my stuff together and have been taking the best possible care of myself ever since. I am determined to avoid going through the misery that my mother suffered. I have done tons of research on the subject and have managed, so far, to avoid insulin and complications. I keep my blood glucose in the normal range almost all the time. The only time I have problems maintaining it is when I'm sick and get spikes up in the 170 range. Managing it isn't as difficult as many here make it seem. I just keep my weight down, watch my calories, and exercise regularly. I take 500 mg of Metformin twice a day. Sometimes, I don't have to take it at all and still maintain fasting glucose under 110. Admittedly, this takes a lot of diligent work, but it sure beats the alternative. Am I depressed because I have it? Absolutely not... it taught me to take care of myself and be healthy again. Am I depressed because so many have it or are getting it because they didn't or don't take care of themselves? Nope. What's depressing is seeing so many people here (not just diabetics) who don't have a clue as to how to do things on their own and take care of themselves. Instead, they rely on doctors and complete strangers for advice and probably don't use it once they get it. They prefer, instead, to live to eat, not eat to live.

comment for the first response... People with type 2 may also have to take insulin thank you very much!!! Please be careful with replys that are not accurate. To answer the question... To me the most depressing thing( i don't like to look at it that way though) is a simple illness can be so much worse because infection can cause you blood sugars to get out of whack. You have to be careful daily with eating healthy but that should be a positive life style change not depressing. Just get into the habit of keeping track of your sugars and know what your range should be. Don't take illness likely. Get a good book or search the web for diabetes.

The most depressing thing is watching people struggle with it when it can be reversed like I helped my brother do. He was diagnosed with it and had his levels normalize within 3 months. Mainly with omega-3 oils and Cinnamon. His glucose levels have been rock solid!
