I think that it is strange because one of the most common reasons given for being a vegetarian is to stop cruelty to animals. There are some people who call themselves vegetarians even though they eat fish, they might be OK with fishing for food but catch and release would be a very strange thing for a vegetarian to like.

Not strange at all, I am no vegetarian by a long chalk but the mere smell of fish can turn my stomach and i have tried all types of fish/seafood however the prospect of sitting on a riverbank/shore line/boat with rod in hand makes me smile as i love it it's a relaxing sport! I must admit to not baiting my lines the majority of the time so i can enjoy a beer in a peaceful location!

depends on the reasoning behind your vegetarianism. I know some vegetarians that do eat fish, others like to fish and give the fish to their non vegetarian friends (I am looking for a friend like this , LOL)
Anyway, there are a lot of nonvegetarians that do the catch and release fishing because it is just a sport for them- for me- no point in catching them if you or someone is not goign to eat them, just seems kind of cruel.

Indirect answer to ya' question...After reading answers!!! Facts and differences on "Herbivore's" (Vegetarians, and Vegans)!!! Vegans are a spin off of Vegetarians. Vegetarians being the first (Dating back as far as1835 -1845) to eat NOTHING that comes from a being that swims, breathes, or gives birth. Vegans (Dating back to 1940 -1945) follow same code of ethics as Vegetarians only, much stricter. Eating preferably all fruits, veggies in raw form. Nuts, legumes/beans (Fact, peanut is in legume group, NOT nut group!!!) grains, soy products (Another legume) are Herbivore's forms of protein. This "Lifestyle"being inconvenient in "our modern" society...Hence: "New age Vegetarians"...Whom allow chicken, fish etc. into their diets. Vegan's although a spin off of Vegetarians, have taken herbivore lifestyle to an even higher level of what NOT to eat, wear, even immunizations of themselves, as well as their children, etc.!!! Vegans REFUSE to wear/use ANY leather, fur, (NOT to ignore another "in" gig PETA), wool, feathers (Feather pillows). Add, NOT brushing ya' teeth...Ole' saying...An apple a day, will keep the doctor away...Vegan's substitute this for brushing their teeth!!! Neither is a new gig!!! Both are just "in" gigs!!! I suggest, ya' go fishing, enjoy the fresh air, vit D from the sun (Plz use a sunscreen), most of all the "sport"...As long as ya' are catching, and releasing... All good. Those whom are dissin' ya' for doing such...Probably are sporting their high $$$ leather sneakers, casually, jogging (LOL), Prada leather handbags...Ordering their salads, heavy on the ranch, plz...LOL!!!

Omega-3-fatty acids, which are found in fish, are essential to brain function. Even if you are a vegetarian, you should have some fish, or fish oil, in your diet to keep your brain in good condition.

Yes but if you eat fish, you are nat vegetarian. I think it's not false. If you want to be a vegetarian, you can not eat fish. If you eat fish so, you are not vegetarian. I don't say that you can not eat fish. It's up to you.

I guess it depends on why you are vegetarian. My friend who is vegetarian would proubly have no problem with this since she stoped eating meat because it never appealed to her. I however stopped because it was stupid of me to love animals yet eat ones our culture has decided are unimportant.
