This morning my dog began limping on his hind right leg. I've checked the leg thoroughly, checked each of the pads and in between but can find nothing wrong, no cuts, swelling - nothing. He doesn't flinch at all, no matter where I prod.
I took him for a short walk earlier, he started out not putting his foot down at all. As the walk went on he began putting his foot down, then the limp got less and less obvious - although never went away completely.
He was completely fine last night. Obviously if it continues I'll take him to the vet but I was just wondering if anyone had advice in the meantime.
He's resting now.
If it helps, he's a 6yr old ex-racing greyhound. We've had him since January and never had this problem before.

Just want to say thanks to you all for your help.
He improved then got worse again so we took him to the vets today. Vet seems to think it's a recurrence of an old racing injury that's flared up. He's been given some anti-inflammatories and we're going back to the vet in a week's time. Fingers crossed he'll be better soon.
Thanks again.

One of my greyhounds has this problem intermittently. According to the vet, it's a spot he injured during his racing days and he'll likely get arthritis there as he ages (he's 9 now). He's been on glucosamine daily as a preventative and still plays like a puppy. Greyhounds are pretty stoic and often won't flinch which is frustrating when you're trying to find out where they hurt.
It could just be a strain, but with no swelling, I don't think so. If it continues, just have him checked out. Until he stops limping, you can still walk him, but try not to let him run and aggravate it more.

You sound like a good dog owner. You've done all the normal stuff a concerned and caring person does, and you're planning a trip to the vet if needs be.
Offer him a heating pad on low heat and see if he puts his sore spot on it. If so, he may be getting a little touch of arthritis. We had a dog that did that. He'd be sure to put his sore hip or leg on the warmth from the heating pad -- then sigh contentedly as he settled in. We covered it with an old towel before placing it on the floor and showing him where it was.

I have a friend who has a small breed dog. The dog started limping randomly. They went to the doctor and found that he had a birth defect that was affecting his walking. They had to remove the ball joint, and he was fine after that. Perhaps a doc visit would be advised for xray of the leg that is the issue. He could also have slept on it wrong. look for heat or swelling in the leg by feeling both legs. Heat is a sign of injury, so is swelling. Give it a day.

Was he on the bed or sofa this morning before you took him out for a walk, if so did he jump off either really quick, he might have just jumped too hard and caused a bit of bruising inside, if he is still the same on Monday I would take him to the vets as it could be a bit of arthritis from all the running he did over the years, good luck.

My beagle when she feels like it limps for no reason, checked feet pads etc but never find anything. My other beagle had a grass seed in between his toes it was a trip to the vets I could not see the tiny hole the seed made. It was a seed that was like a whatear. They pick them up when walked through long grass or when its just been cut.Hope he's ok.

our min pin limped when he had lepto b/c his kidneys hurt. Our Rottweiler limped when he got bone cancer. He started limping way before we could tell it was there. Hopefully it's just arthritis and can be controlled with pain med. Oh, my mom's dog limps because of hip displaysia, but i don't know if greyhounds are prone to that or not. I would definitely go to the vet soon.

Could've been just a strain or something. If he begins doing it again, have the vet check it out.
Since it went away, that likely rules out a break, though there still could be a fracture. Unlikely, though.
