Easy traditional tea sandwhiches include

Cucumber sandwhich: white bread no crust with a thin layer of cream cheese and thinly sliced cucumber.
Egg sandwhich: light rye bread cut in circles (use a round cookie cuter mold) dill herbed cream cheese. Thin slice of boild egg on top with a dot of sour cream and a tiny sliver of chive.
Salmon sandwhich: dark rye bread no crust. Paprika herbed cream cheese, Piece of smoke salmon(rolled nicely to fit) a few capers to garnish
Basic scones with devonshire cream (comes in a jar at whole foods) and marmalade.
Slices strawberries tossed in a little grand marnier with a side of whip cream.
Chocolate truffles (I would just purchase these)
If you really want to be fancy get some cavier, creme fraiche (you can buy this at wholefoods) and make some buckwheat bilinis. There is a very easy recipe in the New Joy of cooking cook book. Of course you will need to start with some champagne with these.

A proper tea, American via Britain should have a balance of sweet and non-sweet. Cucumber slices on thin white bread, no crust, though some like their cucumber on a light rye. Scone's which one can add butter or jam. Tuna-salad and a ham-spread on thin white bread and also on rye and wheat bread, again no crusts. A plate of 'biscuits' which Americans would call Cookies, any Pepperidge farm type such as Geneva or Brussels or Milans (Yum). - - - Simple elegance is the goal. Peace.

Sandwiches are easy to make & there are so many options. Samosas, kachoris, bhajjias, jalebis are good but very time consuming to prepare. Biscuits, cookies ,pastries fresh from the bakery are good & can be eaten w/out making a mess.Hot-dogs, rolls/frankies,burghers are other optins.Have both like something salty & something sweet, so the guests can take their pick or even both.
