Yes, I have had genital herpes for over 5 years now. The only symptoms I have of the virus are the outbreaks, but I haven't had one in almost 2 years (and that's without taking the medication).
My first outbreak was EXTREMELY painful. I was in so much pain when the doctor was examining me and giving me a pap smear I started crying. I was prescribed acyclovir and Vicodin. I also had to call off of work for two days because I could hardly walk or even sit down. I probably had maybe 10-15 sores which healed completely in about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks. Some of them opened and pussed a clearish liquid which was not only painful but also gross. Then they somewhat scabbed over and healed.
The reoccurring outbreak are not NEARLY as bad as the first one. They usually last half the time and are not as painful.

I do have herpes, have had it for 6 years now. My first outbreak was the worst that I've had. I had blisters that were very painful, I was screaming and crying when the doctor did the exam. They lasted for about a week, then they went away. They started me on Valtrex, but I only took it when I had an outbreak.
My recurrent outbreaks were less severe, I still had blisters but not as painful. My private parts were swollen, tender, and as the blisters healed, they became itchy but it hurt like hell to scratch.
I haven't been taking Valtrex now for almost a year and a half because I'm trying to get pregnant, and I haven't had any outbreaks sofar, and I'm thankful for that.

I've had it for almost 10 years. I've tried Valtrex suppressively, but it gives me headaches and nausea after about 5 days. I'd rather have the ob's. It's far worse psychologically and emotionally than physically. I get an outbreak on my left middle finger too, once every few months. It's worse than any of my genital ob's. Maddening itch, a little cluster of bumps that turn into nasty looking black sores. Ugh. It lasts about 2 weeks.

No symptoms,
or many symptoms.
Two types -
Type1- ora-labial type.
Type 2- genitial herpes.
Both present with vesicles and blisters and red rash, Painful and oozing.
Flare treated by Acyclovir and its class of drugs. Eradication of Herpes unlikely, repeated flares at time of stress and reduced immunity due to any cause.
