I washed some rice two days ago and realized I washed too much so I removed a cup of it and set it aside. I was going to cook it today but made something else so a few minutes ago, I was wondering if the damp rice is still good so I stuck my head down near the rice and took a deep breath-to smell it but -to my surprise some rice grains went up in my nostrils. Now I don't think they all came out. So what shall I do? Will the rice swell while I'm sleeping? Should I go to the hospital emergency? Will it just work its way out while I sleep? I've tried blowing and using a suction thing but nothing works. Are an adults nostrils big enough that this is no big deal? This is a serious question. TY

If it went anywhere besides the back of your throat it went into your sinuses. Since you are not having any problems breathing I feel certain that is not in your lungs. If it would make you feel better, you could wash you sinuses out with saline water. Dissolve a little salt in some warm water. Not too much salt or it will hurt. Take a teaspoon of the salt water and sort it up each nostril, or lead back and let it drain into each nostril. You should taste the salt water in the back of you throat. After about 30 seconds or so blow your nose. Even if you don't get any rice out, I would not worry about a doctor visit unless you developed a bad sinus infection. Good Luck!

Marg, I agree with that one guy, if the rice is still in your nose, you'd feel it. If you feel nothing out of the ordinary tho, I think you are worrying too much. It is just 2 small grains of rice. I'm sure it will do you no harm. Maybe it already went down your throat and you just didn't feel it. But if you are still concerned, you can always visit your doctor. It will make you have peace of mind rather than worry all your life if that rice grain grow a field in your nose! JK LOL
I'm so sorry Marg, but this is the farthest my brain can think of! Just trying to cheer you up!
Get some rest for now, it's late over there.

In general I believe that white rice has been treated such that it probably will not grow. Now this is serious a child had stuffed some corn up his nose and eventually had some serious sinus problems. They went to check what it was and found that the corn had taken root and grown up into his sinuses such that it had to be surgically removed. If it was wild rice or brown rice which is rice with the coating on it still I would be concerned about that. It is not common for this to happen but if you are concerned you can see your physician about this or if you begin having sinus problems promptly see a medical doctor about this. Most of the time this does not occur but the child also shoved it up in his sinuses he did not inhale it.

You don't have to go to the emergency room, but you should see a doctor. The rice could spout in the small safe environment, it could decompose or a misc. number of things so to be on safe side visit the doctor. It won't work its way out while you sleep. See the rice has been sucked into the sinus area too deep for you to get it out. Probably it will decompose, but there is always the other possibility.

I would not worry about it. Most likely it will work it's way down the sinus and into your stomach. If you are going to worry so much though that you are not going to get any sleep then go to the after hours clinic or emergency romm. Otherwise here is a phone number to call that has a free 24hr. nurse line. The number is 800-57-nurse.

I don't have medical background but I don't think you should worry about it too much. The rice will come out eventually, one way or another. I choked while eating rice before and some went inside my nose. After a while it came out. Either thru your nose or you just swallow it.

OK let' Understand this a little better....What you did is snorted a few grains of rice in your nose.....You are worried that they will expand and you will not be able to breath..Right...Lets look at this like a scientist would ....me being a scientist....The rate of a piece of rice is .021200 of an in. expanding per inflating means unless you actually snorted 325 grains of rice...which means about in layman's terms 69 little tiny pieces of rice you should have no repercussions......However if you are worried about your boyfriend....That your husband doesn't know about because your belly is growing ...tell him it's the rice.....

i'm able to purely recommend which you get a 2nd opinion. Take her to a new child's wellbeing midsection. enable them to examine her out. go for the period of the ER. they could desire to ascertain you and could could ascertain her out. in case you call for an appointment, it ought to take a month to get in. yet, as a determine, i'm able to purely inform you that i does no longer be chuffed with what is going on. i might prefer solutions and that i might prefer them now. you comprehend your new child greater appropriate than every physique. And, in case you experience that something is faulty, then, it in all probability is. you have the "precise" to question each and every thing while it includes healthcare and your new child. don't be afraid to ask and don't settle for some Bullsh*t answer the two.

hey there,
im a med student.as far as i can say is that as long as u don't experience breathing difficulty its not a medical emergency.if u have some other symptoms such as swelling, congestion or sneezing.or any other associated symptom.u should see a chest specialist.our respiratory system is quite delicate and it has its own defence mechanism.so it should resolve naturally.wait and see.but when theres a breathing difficulty(air way obstruction) itll turn to emergency crisis.

There is nothing to worry about, even if they went into your lungs your body will do its thing and get rid of them. We would have to be talking about ALOT of rice for it to matter, enough to fill the lungs.
