I was 19 it was 1974 and I was doing what many kids do, drink too much, I'd go into a bar order a shot & beer! I'd drink the shot n/p but 1/2 the beer & I'd be running to spray the porcelin! I woke up in a hospital Intensive Care unit, hooked up to respirators, being fed through cut downs and stuff! A doctor told me when I arrived at the ER my blood sugar was 1,200!

I have diabetes as a result of Cystic Fibrosis. It's known as CFRD (Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes) and it doesn't completely fit under type 1 or type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed at age 27.
I tried the diet/exercise gig for a couple of years but it didn't work well for me. Then the insulin shots but had way too many highs/lows. I went on the insulin pump a little over 2 years ago and love it!

I was 22. Funny story actually because I had spent 3 months going to the BAS (battalion aid station) complaining about unquenchable thirst, excessive tiredness, extremely dry mouth. And it wasn't until my CO noticed I dropped a bunch of weight (at the time I went down to 134lbs. and I am 5'10") Well since his wife was a diabetic , all the symptoms sounded familiar to him and he jumped into the medical officers ****....well then I was admitted to the naval hospital ICU with a blood sugar of 923. What fun!!!
