The doctor would do a CD4 count and when those cells drop below a certain level you are said to have AIDS. You have HIV up until this time, it takes different lengths of time for different people. Just because someone was diagnosed 10 years ago it does not mean they have AIDS. Everybody is different. There are also a lot of drugs available that are helping people live relatively normal somewhat healthy lives. I think that is the answer you were looking for!

10 years ago is when they started screening the blood for the virus, no one knew much about the virus only that many people were dying, it is kind of impossible to pinpoint who and where one got it from, one can only guess on that reflecting on their own life, were they with one partner or were there several? only that person really knows. Being HIV Positive is when you have a high # of t-cells ( at least over 500) and a viral load of over 200 and are asymptomatic. It is when the t-cells drop below 200 that you are considered a person with full blown AIDS, and once you have AIDS you do not go back to HIV Positive, Is this person fatigued more, is he getting sick more often, these are just a few basic items that the disease is breaking down the immune system, which would make it harder for it to fight off infection. Also is this person being seen by a doctor and having to t-cell and viral load checked quarterly? Has this person started on any anti viral medications? Is it more advanced? that is hard to say, as every body handles a different way, there are alot of contributing factors, like does this person handle the disease with a positive outlook, is there alot of stress, is casual sex present, are street drus in the picture, An easy way out for me would be to say Yes it has advanced, but not really knowing this persons cicumstances it would honestly be hard to say. One thing is this person is still alive, he is a survivor. So God Bless him, and to say "Thanks for your concern"...

I think if there are radical people, they will always be so, but I don't believe that everyone who is against circumcision will have their opinion changed by this. I'm not against circumcision for other people, but I will not have it done for my son, even in light of reading this. I think the study is fascinating and important, but we've know since the jews first invented circumcision that it cuts down on the incidence of disease and illness. Circumscising men in Africa may be the best defense IN AFRICA for cutting down on AIDS (like the ancient jews, they don't have a lot of clean wash water), but here in the states we can protect against HIV and infections with proper cleaning, use of condoms, and smart sexual and lifestyle choices, and that is what I will teach my uncircumcised son. Hopefully, the fanatics out there will read about this study and realize that not everything is black and white, and that what is good for some isn't necessarily good for everyone, and choose to tone down the fanaticism a bit.

People handle it differently. They say that 10 years is the AVERAGE time that it takes for HIV to start causing AIDS. Hiv generally doesn't affect you physically a whole lot. AIDS causes a breakdown in your immune system that causes all kinds of NASTY infections and diseases to develope.

You can stay in HIV status indefinitely. AIDS is when you start to become symptomatic. HIV can CAUSE AIDS. With the drugs they have today, some people never become symptomatic. It all depends on T Cell levels of the person whether they actually get sick or not.

AIDS is the adult immunodeficiency syndrome, caused by the HIV virys. It causes you to have no defense against other diseases like certain pneumonias, cancers, viruses, etc. That's what people with AIDS die from.
