During my annual checkup this year my doctor detected one in my heart. Last year she said my heart was fine. But my doctor said it could just be an innocent murmur and not to worry so much about it. But I'm just curious to know if teens can have them.

Heart murmurs are actually common in children and teens. Most are 'innocent murmurs', meaning there is no structural problem with the heart. If there is concern, and echocardiogram--an ultrasound test of the heart, can show whether the murmur is caused by something abnormal in the heart.

Yes, one of my family members has had one since birth. It is not dangerous to have one, and you just have to let doctor's know that you do if you are going to have surgery. A murmur can come from the incomplete closing of the valves in the heart. Sometimes people are born without one of their valves, and will live a long life. So don;t worry, and read up on the condition. THe more you know about it, the better you will feel.

any age is susceptible to a murmur. Usually it is something found at birth or in seniors as their heart valves start to wear out. Yours might have had a slight murmur this whole time but wasn't detectable or found till now. Many people have them and live normal lives with them too. Don't worry a bit.

Yes, I had the same experience for my football physical. the murmr is (in my case) caused by elogated valves that permit some back-flow of blood into a chamber from which the blood has just been pumped. I was told that it was not a cause for concern.
