Kaposi Sarcoma is caused by the 8th kind of herpes virus (herpes simplex virus 8) and usually happens after the patient has had AIDS for a while. By the time lesions appear, it is likely that the immune system has already been severely weakened.

Not everyone with HIV/AIDS get this though. Many people never develop these lesions. With the rise of AIDS in Africa, Kaposi Sarcoma has become the most frequently reported cancer in some countries, such as Zimbabwe.
