You are right that there are now more people with HIV/AIDS than there were several years ago, but the rate of infection is actually slowing down.

There are problems in some parts of the world because of social customs. People don't talk about such matters because it's against the way their society works. It's not that they don't care; people care very much about a disease that could kill them!

Education is the key to preventing the spread of HIV, and the main focus is on changing behaviour so that people do things the right way to keep safe. But there is also the problem that in some very poor countries, health car workers do not have the resources to even do simple tests on children and determine if they are infected or not, with the result that the disease is passed on from infected ones to (for example) brothers and sisters or children they play with. Even if the children can be tested, there is often no way to supply them with the drugs they need to stop their infection turning into full-blown AIDS. This is because some of the drugs must be refrigerated and many villages have no electricity, so they can't store the drugs even if they can get them.

It is a huge and complex problem, with those who have the least suffering the most. But with education, more money going into testing and into ways to supply the drugs, there is hope that this pandemic can be brought under control.

There was an excellent program about this on CNN International just a few weeks ago. If you check their website or write them I am sure you can get more information. There are also many HIV/AIDS support organizations on the Web that can help you with whatever you want to know.

HIV is a virus that is not transmitted just through sex. Blood transfusion, infected mothers that give birth, infected needles etc are also important factors in transmitting HIV.
Drug addicts, prostitutes, people with a lot of sex partners are the most susceptible to getting an HIV infection.
The lack of sexual education plays a great role in the increase of AIDS cases lately. People are not well informed by the medical staff and there is also the thought of "that would never happen to me".
I would think of "lack of education" in general, not just the lack of sex education.
Once they get the HIV infection, there is another problem. Not only that some people do not understand the importance of NEVER interrupting the antiviral medication (because HIV is a very clever virus and he manages to escape the immune response and gains resistance to the drugs that are supposed to stop its replication), but they do not inform their sexual partners about their condition. And so the virus spreads.
It is a very sad situation. I read some other questions about HIV and AIDS... people do not have the minimum information required to live in a world full of STDs. It's a good thing they ask... at least some of them do.

I think it's a mess. I think when people don't open their eyes and start to see this as an epidemic , then it will get much worse before it gets any better. But, it's hard to see Aids. We hear about Aids a lot. But do we see it. I don't see it everyday. And when I hear about a case of someone Famous dying from it, then I say oh that's to bad then, I go on. If people started bleeding out of their ears and noses then we would see it and their would be more people that would be up in a roar. Does this make since? I think this is why Aids is not open to the world. Of course we all know about it. I think it will have to touch us in some way before we start to realize that it's a horrible problem. People do care though. I think they do care.

In developing countries there are no sufficient Laboratory facilities to diagnose this HIV infection. So through the blood donation it is spreading more. Lack of sex education and awareness about Aids among the youth, laborers, drivers especially the lorry drivers, army personal, migrated laborers, drug addicts, and the people from lower strata of the society. The period between contracting this disease and the development of signs and symptoms is more than ten years; so by that time more people are affected by the infected person. The main cause is lack of awareness among the people about this dreaded disease.

I would have to say the single most important reason AIDS is on the rise would be sexual promiscuity.

The hype that you can have safe sex is the most moronic, misleading, myth being spread today. A condom is 99% effective for preventing pregnancy. The micro-organisms that cause AIDS are smaller than sperm cells.

And we all know that there are 1000's upon 1000's of unwanted pregnancies every year. It's not because people don't know how they get pregnant, it's strictly that they partake in risky behaviors. Most men do not like to wear condoms. They avoid it like the plague. And most women won't make a guy wear one. To promote safe sex, when most people know what that means and CHOOSE not to is unrealistic and dangerous.

Sex education classes across this country are teaching children that there is such a thing as safe sex when 1. there is not and 2. they know most people won't wear the condoms anyway.

This nation needs to wake up!!! AIDS is on the rise because sex is pedaled like a commodity in this country and throughout the world. It's used to sell products, it's used to sell music and movies, it's riddled in every aspect of our lives. If anyone thinks that kind of bombardment has no effect on people (especially impressionable young people) they are in complete and utter DENIAL. If advertising (that's what it is) doesn't sell, then why do companies spend millions on one commercial, magazine ad, or spot in a movie. Please...advertising works and sex sells. And when it comes to sex people don't like condoms.

Another issue is oral sex. It's on the rise as well. You can't get pregnant but people aren't thinking about the AIDS issue. It's a huge trend in Middle Schools now. How outrageous is that? My goodness, I didn't think about sex in middle school. What has changed? TV, MUSIC, ADVERTISING, MOVIES (even kids cartoons like Shrek have sexual inuendos)

Sex is a wonderful experience in the right environment. But outside of marriage it's dangerous, demoralizing, heartbreaking, physically damaging, mentally damaging, and often has consequences a person must pay for a life time. People need to wake up and start teaching their children to wait. They need to know where their kids are at all times. They need to throw the tv out the door (until programmers get a clue). They need to insist that their kids not dress provactively. They need to insist that their kids not listen to music that promotes sex (that means they have to listen to their kids music). They need to talk to their kids about the dangers and consequences and insist that their kids not engage in pre-marital sex. It worked generations ago, but in the past 50 years it has been taught that you can't stop them, so teach them safe sex. Bologna!!!!!!!!! You can teach your children to make right choices....especially if you take all those outrageous examples out of their lives.

AIDS is rampant because of the behaviors of people throughout the world. It's not that they don't know how it spreads. They just believe it can't happen to them.
