I'm going to guess you are talking about herpes. Usually that's the only STD where the phrase "outbreak" is used.

The first, or primary, genital herpes outbreak can last a week to a few weeks. It also depends if you have medication to treat it or not. If a person has medication it can take a week or two, if they don't have medication it can take three weeks or so for the sores to heal.

The first outbreak is always the worse. It is the most painful and most severe. The longer you have genital herpes the less outbreaks you will have and the less severe they are. I have personally had genital herpes for over 5 years now. My last outbreak was almost 2 years ago.

If you are referring to herpes, the first outbreak usually comes on about 2-3 weeks after exposure. Depending on your immune system and your stress level, the initially outbreak will probably be your worst and last the longest of any subsequent outbreak you will have since there is no cure for herpes. You're looking at probably 7-10 days for your first outbreak. Your subsequent outbreaks will last 4-7 days depending on whether or not you are on suppressive therapy, i.e. taking Valtrex or a similar type suppression drug.

If you do have herpes (I recommend going to a doctor and getting a test) get on something like Valtrex ASAP. Taken daily, Valtrex can keep your symptoms from coming back for a year or more. And when you do have an outbreak, it usually doesn't last very long. Plus, Valtrex can help you from spreading it to others.

Here is a tip for getting rid of the outbreak before you get on a suppressive drug. It sounds silly, but take a blow dryer and on a low setting wave it over the affected area. Keep a good distance to not burn yourself and don't hold it on the spot too long. Do that a few times a day and keep your genitals dry (baby powder). Herpes lasts longer in a moist environment.

Hope this helps....
