Most people are able to get rid of the virus, but sometimes it will stay with the person their entire life.

Usually the strains that can cause cancer and warts stay with the person and never go away. You can have the warts treated, but, I've read there is about a 20% chance they will come back and you'll have to have them treated again. Even if you body does get rid of the virus, you can still contracted it again. Good luck to you!

Keep in mind that genital warts may not appear for months to years after having sexual contact with an infected person. However, the warts frequently reappear after treatment. Even after you have been treated for HPV, you may still infect others. (medlinePlus)
Although treatments can get rid of the warts, they do not get rid of the HPV virus, so warts can recur after treatment. The body's immune system typically clears the virus anywhere from 6 months to two years, but it occasionally remains in the body for a lifetime.(Wikipedia)
Please see the webpages for more details on Human Papilloma virus (Genital warts).

What you are currently doing is unfair to your girlfriend. If you adore her like you said- you would have told her about the warts before you started having sex with her....or after posting this question you certainly better be telling her now. You did NOT give her the option of whether or not she wanted to have sex with you WITH the knowledge that you have HPV. You took away her choice by not disclosing. Just because the warts are gone does not mean you are "cured". You cannot "cure" a virus. Even though you are having sex with a condom she is still at risk of contracting HPV/warts from you. Proper condom usage does not prevent the transmission of HPV/warts. Don't even think of having sex with her without a condom. If your girlfriend does not currently go for regular pap smears- encourage her to go now.

Yes, its possible to treat genital warts successfully (I did and so did my girlfriend) and it can take a few months for your body to get rid of the virus on its own (providing you have a good immune system and have lady luck on your side)

And for those of you who don't know, there are treatments that not many people know about that can successfully get rid of viral STD's like genital warts and herpes.

There is actually a doctor in Arkansas who has successfully treated many hundreds of herpes patients and a few genital warts patients. One site that has taken some of his findings and told about them in a report (put out for genital warts, but part is applicable to herpes too) can be found at the Genital Warts Report.

You will live with the HPV all of your life. It is treatable but not curable. You may go into 'remission' for the rest of your life but the virus will always be in your body.
