I'm a vegetarian- i don't eat ANIMALS! That includes fish, chicken and red meat. Just because fish aren't as cute as lambs doesn't mean a so-called 'vegetarian' or 'semi-vegetarian' can eat them. What's that about??? Veggies, aren't you sick of being offered fish when you tell people you're a vegetarian? Face it, if you eat fish you are not a vegetarian! Ok, rant over. Thankyou.

675, thanks for the question! I do eat eggs. I don't consider them to have the potential to be living beings unless they are fertillised, which commercially eaten eggs are not. ie; the chicken lays eggs anyway, regardless of whether they have an embryo inside them. Therefore, I don't personally have a problem with eating those that don't. However that's just my personal preference.

Arrr, someone after my own heart !

I have to remind so many people in this forum that vegetarian means you don;t eat meat, fish or pultry. Pointing them to the dictionary definition seems to have no effect. They just seem hellbent on calling themselves vegetarian.

Why I wonder ?

Maybe they think its trendy, i don't know.

One thing is for sure, they are not veggies.

They confuse the whole issue for all of us to the extent where I've seen pubs offer fish as the veggie option.

I'm also concerned about all these derivatives of the word veggie to accomodate all variations. Its confusing. Why would you eat fish and claim to be a veggie ?

I did meet one girl who said she was vegetarian on weekdays. I guess what she really meant was she was too poor to eat meat during the week. Unless of cause animals don't feel the pain if you kill them on a saturday.

Nightmares.

Do you remember the Veggie Soc campaign ?

It was a great idea. Print up some business cards that same "fish are animals too" or something, and put the definition of a veggie on the back. Then leave them in pubs etc whenever you get offered fish as an alternative.

Feel free to add this question every day and I'll reply every day, maybe one day they will get the message.

Cheers,

Now, where did I leave that fishpaste....Ok, OK, just kidding

We've also had the debate about eggs in this forum. People don't get that either. We've got 50 hens at home, totally free range naturally ( not Sainsburys or Tesco version of FreeRange -which are not - its just marketing hype ).

The Eggs are not animals, they are the byproduct of the reproductive system. They cannot possible produce a living animal unless we introduce a cockerel to them ( for which we have a seperate orchard)

Without being too gross, saying all eggs can be a chicken is like saying all women are murderers because they flush a sanitary towel down the loo once a month. Sorry, before anyone rants at me, its NOT MY OPINION, its just to prove how stupid the arguement about unfertilised eggs is.

Finally, some people just don't get your question. I don't care what anyone eats, you want to eat meat ? help yourself.
The issue is around peole who eat dead animals calling themselves veggies, they shouldn't.

The correct 'label' for a 'semi-vegetarian', ie a fish-but-no-other-meat eater, is a pescivore.
And they are 'pesky' too when they call themselves veggie, because it misleads others into thinking that all vegetarians can eat fish and that you must be a vegan if you don't!

Agreed, cutting out some meat from your diet is better than doing nothing at all, but any label with the word 'vegetarian' in it cannot eat any animal. At all. Period.

So next time you get offered fish, or hear a fish-eater saying they're veggie, correct them - they're pescivores!

Semi anythings are pretty annoying to tell you the truth.
yeah i get what you mean, but surely the point of a true vegetarian is that they are making their mark against the cruelty involved in the process of killing the animal - i.e. rearing to kill etc...but, the bit that I don't get is that if everyone was a vegetarian then the whole food chain would fall apart - as we are the top of the food chain it's purely natural to be eating any animals we like. If we didn't then we'd be over-run by all the other animals on the planet that we currently eat and the ecosystem as we know it would go crazy!! I'm kinda in agreeance with you on the "can't make your mind up" bit, but worried about the consequences if vegetarians took over the world!!

First of all better half a vegetarian then not at all. Second you could choose to eat animals that have little or almost no awareness and therefore are less likely to suffer intensely. We accept the fact that carrots do not suffer because they have no brains. Well shrimps have also a very limited set of neurons in their head and are thus more similar then carrots. Cows by contrast much higher in the hierarchy of intelligence can anticipate and sense something terrible is going to happen before they die. Thus, I believe as a vegetarian you should encourage people to become at least semi veggie and safe a large amount of pain animals from suffering. ciao A

Isn't being semi-vegetarian better than not being vegetarian at all? I myself avoid eating animals, but I need some as a source of protein. But as far as fish not being considered as part of the vegetarian "no,no" list: A fish is obviously an animal, so why would a true vegetarian want to eat it or any other seafood for that matter. I agree with you on that.

Yes they are annoying. I am not a vegetarian, but I have friends who claim to be so when I invite them for a meal I spend time trying to work out a really good meal that they can eat, then I go out a buy the stuff in specially for them only to have them say, "Oh you shouldn't have gone to so much trouble, you could have just done me an omelet or some fish", or even in one case, chicken. I think if you are going to say you're a veggie then be one, it is ridiculous to be a semi... it's like being slightly pregnant.

So? It's their choice on what they decide to eat. Ever notice that fish and meat are always seperated? Yeah sure, it doesn't really make sense cuz vegetarian means only vegetables (and plants). But whatever. Don't get mad at what people choose to eat.

i think what ever effort a person has made to change even reducing the amount of meat is commendable.i think you contradict yourself when you bash others about eating fish while you admit to eating eggs. this should not be a debate as to who is right or who is wrong if your way works for you great but, don't put others down.

lol Yep, vegetarians should only eat - d'uh - vegetables.

Sooo, do you eat eggs/cheese/dairy products?? Any rants on that?? I'm kidding, I know that the cheese and dairy products aren't animals, but eggs had the potential to be an animal. (Where do YOU stand on that?)

well there is different types of "vegetarians". maybe u are a "vegan"? as in no dairy, no meat or fish. i must point out though....a true vegan doesnt have ANYTHING with meat, cheese, fish, poultry. you would be surprised at how many foods have these in them. not to mention that if u are into not harming any creatures that u may wanna rethink your shampoo, washing powder, soap etc
