The DEA requires that they be destroyed. Donating them in the US is illegal ( sadly). Some pharmacies might take them back but they're not supposed to re-use them

You must take them back to the pharmacy or give to the doctor. Some doctors' still use them for patients who can't afford it. But here in Canada it's against the law. So we hand them over to the pharmacist and he throws them all into a container and gets rid of them.

Take them back to the pharmacy. If they are in their original container they can actually get credit for them. If you have medication that has been removed from it's original package, like tablets or capsules they will not reuse them, they'll have to be destroyed.
