I got real bad chest pains yesterday on the left side of my chest.. It started as I was driving home from work and progressed. I could barely breathe and was starting to hyperventilate. Once I got home I layed on my bed, but every which way i turned, it hurt even worse..I have had chest pains in the past but my doctor said it was "gurt" , "heatburn", which i was prescribed Prevacid for. Well i got chest pains about 1 1/2 months ago and i went to the hospital, they took x-rays, ekg, blood... and everything came out normal, and then the doctor told me to take protonix instead of prevacid, Which i have been. These chest pains also happened about 4months ago, which woke me up from my sleep, but lasted only about 15minutes. This pain that i am having is NO where near Heartburn !!!! So what exactly causes these Sharp Chest pains??? and What can me the Answer to this??

Your doctor diagnosed you with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). Believe it or not, it CAN cause pain that rivals a heart attack. The unfortunate thing is, YOU can never take for granted that your chest pain is solely related to gastric reflux. You'll become one of the hundreds of thousands whose chest pain causes them to visit their local ED (emergency departments). Most are not having 'heart attacks' but digestional related pain.

The reason that GERD is so much more painful than heartburn is because heartburn is something that happens on occasion, while GERD happens so often it often leaves the esophagus inflamed. Some cases of GERD become so sever the tissue of the esophagus becomes eroded from the constant acid backing up into it. The lose of the protective lining is the reason it hurts so much more than occasional heartburn.

Other than avoiding food that exacerbate the problem, talk to your doctor about perscribing you what is commonly refered to as a GI cocktail (a mixture of antacid and lidocaine). The lidocaine numbs the nerve endings in the esophagus while the antacid coats (and hopefully soothes).

Never ever feel ashamed or embarassed if the pain makes you go the an ED. People with GERD can have heart attacks. Chest pain should never be ignored!

I had something similar happening to me about a year ago. I thought that something was terribly wrong. The Doctor said the same to me that it was heartburn, they even diagnosed me with acid reflux. All medications that I was taken did not stop these pains that I was continuing to have. I sought out a second opinion and my second diagnosis was anxiety which can make you feel like you are having a heart attack. I took zanax for six weeks until I got to the root of my anxiety. Once I found out what was causing my anxiety the chest pains stopped.

have you asked your dr to give you an ultrasound to see if your gallbladder is acting up? when mine was ready to burst i thought it was gas/indigestion and ate a boat load of tums till the pain was so unbearable i could hardly move and i knew it was not my heart or anything else and something i told the ER dr made him to an ultrasound and he told me to get ready for the OR my gallbladder was filled with stones it was ready to go at any time. i never thought i would have sharp pains in my chest only on my side where the gallbladder is but for most ppl pain in the chest is a first sign if everything else is good is gallbladder trouble good luck

Don't worry dear.If you have done coronary angiography & discovered that no coronary hypoperfusion & all is normal so angina is excluded[anginal pain is retrosternal increase with effort & is referrd on inner side of left arm but unstable angina can occur at rest]So it could be gastrooesophageal reflux which causes heart pain & is sometimes referred to the back.

It could be swollen ribs of inflamed muscle. Do you work out alot? I get it every so often and it hurts for a couple of days. The medical name is costochondritis. It almost feels like you are having a heart attack and you get so nervous about it that you start to hyperventilate and your pulse to increase.
