There are different types, a lot of people have what is called a functional heart murmur which means nothing serious just a innocent glitch in their heart, but the other type needs surgery or it can be very serious.

A murmur is a term used for an abnormal sound heard when your doctor/provider listens to your heart with a stethoscope. This murmur could be due to one of several different causes that vary from completely benign to very serious. The significance of a murmur can very easily be determined by a simple, non-invasive test called echocardiogram. You can learn more about echocardiogram at

I hope this helps.

To answer your question is yes. There are different types of murmers, some are no big deal, some are a big deal. The murmer is simply the turbulant blood flow caused by some pathology of the heart. The best thing is certainly be evaluated to determine the cause and treatment if any. An echocardiogram is non-evasive and can tell a lot about the health of heart valves.

No, not as such. Many people go on to live long lives with heart murmurs.
However, a murmur might indicate some other problem.
