You don't HAVE to wear a condom. It's not like it's a law or anything. All condoms do is help prevent the spread of herpes, even then, condoms are not 100% effective. It's possible to still get herpes even if condoms are used. If a person is currently on an outbreak it can be spread by just direct skin to skin contact with the sores, even if a condom is used. Condoms only cover the penis, herpes sores can appear all over the genital area, not just the part covered by the condom.

Many people end up getting herpes from their partner when they try to conceive. Since you obviously have to have unprotected sex for a girl to get pregnant it is very possible to spread herpes at this time.

Genital herpes really isn't as uncommon as most people think. 1 in 4 women have genital herpes and 1 in 5 men have it. Also, genital herpes does not cause any health problems like most STDs can. It doesn't cause cancer like HPV can, it's not deadly like HIV or syphilis can be. Herpes doesn't cause a person to become infertile or sterile like gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia can if left untreated. Honestly, it's probably one of the best STDs to have out of all the STDs (for your health anyway). The only bad thing about herpes is that it can be passed down to a child through the mother during birth. This is REALLY rare though. I've read about it and done a lot of research and have found this happens in less than 1% of births.

Yes you may have to wear a condom if you want to prevent the spread to your parter. Their is still a risk with a condom on but small. Children might be a problem, so talk to your doctor about that, because their is a risk of spreading the disease to your child during child birth, but a C section should prevent spread

Even if you wear a condom, you will continue to spread Herpes simplex virus to your sexual partners knowingly or unknowingly. Genital herpes cannot be cured. Once infected, the virus stays in the body for the rest of the individual's life
Research suggests that the virus can be transmitted even when there are no symptoms present, so that a sexual partner without obvious genital herpes sores may still transmit the illness. In fact, asymptomatic spread may actually contribute more to the spread of genital herpes than do active sores.
Please see the web pages for more details and images on Genital Herpes and Herpes simplex virus.

The person who said that you will continue to spread herpes even if you use a condom is wrong. The virus goes into "latent" periods. Stay healthy, get enough sleep, keep clean, eat right, etc., and you can suppress the virus. You may be a "viral shedder" at times, but if you take the necessary precautions you won't necessarily spread herpes even if you do NOT use a condom.
