They each come from a different plant...
In regards to cooking... there is a huge difference in these spices.
Mustard seeds tend have more of a "spicy" flavor...

If u know Hindi//Gujarati, Poppy seeds are Khas Khas and Mustard seeds are Rai, which are bigger than poppy seeds in size , Usually mustards seeds are used for tempering ( Baghar) & Poppy seeds are tiny round usually offwhite / black in colour.

poppy seeds are white in colour and usually used for decorating sweet churma laddoos or mohan thal( Gujarati sweet dishes) it also finds it use in indian cold drink known as thandai.specially drunk in north it mailk based..mustard seeds are bownish in colour are basically oil seed from which mustard oil is extracted mustard seed is used in tempering with hot oil generally while cooking vegtables.it gives some spice to food and a sort of decoration in certain recipes like khaman dhokla and khandvi.

the names are different!but they r both spices although poppy seeds r used as garnishes like on burger bread rolls while mustard usually arent.

mustard seeds are spicy and have more taste....poppy seed are a bit bland and used primarily for baking products....

mustard is aspice and used for indian and western cuisine.s.indian cuisine is tgere for everything.dark reddish brown in clolor.
