OKAY, Here we go.... An angiogram is more of a pain in the *** than painful and completely necessary.

The catheter starts in the femoral artery- goes to the abdominal aortic artery- then to the thoracic aorta- then to the aortic arch- they shoot a dye in to your heart that can be seen by machines that are all around you and then projected on the screen. If you have a block you will see the dye stop but if there is no block you will actually see ALL the vascularity of the heart on the tv monitor. (its really neat get a copy of the tape)

If they determine you have a signigicant block they do one of two things.

1) They use a balloon to inflate the artery and open it up a bit to clear up a bit of the plumbing (like roto rooter) OR

2) They put in what is called a stint... it maintains a permanent opening of the heart.

WARNING:
If you have a 100% block of any artery you are looking at a bypass surgery.

The bypass is done by taking blood vessels from another part of your body and implanting them to your heart. This is major surgery.

SCARY:
The only way to your heart is through your rib cage. They cut your ribs and lift out your sternum and access your heart that way.

(FYI some out of state *not cali* hospitals do laproscopic surgery... no broken ribs)

The really bad news...
If you do not do exactly what your doctors need you to do you will have severe heart damage or DIE!!!! Sorry if that is too honest.

After your angiogram you will be bed confined up to eight hours because your femoral artery has to heal.... You will bleed out of this artery severely if you do not stay in bed... and you can definately die.

I know this message is harsh but its to completely inform you of what is going on. Talk to your doctor about pain meds and your options... but either way you HAVE to do this surgery.

If you're lucky enough to have it done through your groin, it will be relatively painless.

The neck and chest ones are another story entirely. I'm not saying that the procedure is so painful, but holding your head in a strange position and totally still for a period of time is no fun.

I had my second angiogram in march this year ,doesn`t hurt at all ,You do have a lovely bruised groin where the nurse has to press on it for a few minutes ,

You should really ask lots of questions before having this done make sure you know al the risks talk to the doctor. My daughter in law has had problems since she had hers done and she wasnt told of all the risks involved. Please talk to your doctor first making sure you have all the facts. Its a simple procedure but has its risks.

Not painful per se, it can be uncomfortable and it can also make you feel like you've wet yourself, it's okay, you'll almost certainly not have wet yourself
