Symptoms
Hypertension has aptly been called the "silent killer" because it usually produces no symptoms. Untreated hypertension increases slowly over the years. It is important, therefore, for anyone with risk factors to have their blood pressure checked regularly and to make appropriate lifestyle changes. Such recommendations are urged for individuals who have overall high-normal blood pressure, mild or above systolic with normal diastolic pressure, or family histories of hypertension, or who are overweight or over age 40.
Symptoms of Malignant Hypertension
In rare cases (fewer than 1% of all hypertensive patients), the blood pressure rises quickly (with diastolic pressure usually rising to 130 mm Hg or higher), resulting in malignant or accelerated hypertension. This is a life-threatening condition and must be treated immediately. People with uncontrolled hypertension or a history of heart failure are at increased risk for this crisis.
People should call a physician immediately if these symptoms occur:
Drowsiness.
Confusion.
Headache.
Nausea.
Loss of vision.

Sounds like a tension headache. It worries me that you've never had it before though. The fact that it came back when you stood up makes me worry a little bit about blood pressure. It would have to be astronomically high to cause a headache. If it is that high, you need emergency treatment to lower it *now.* General rule of thumb: whenever you get a headache that you've never felt before, it's a good idea to get it checked out. Most of the time it will turn out to be just a new onset tension or migraine headache, but on rare occasions they might find something serious.

I have hypertension and take blood pressure meds all of the time and when my pressure was really high, I could hear pumping in my ears and had a headache.
Most people have no symptoms of high blood pressure. Thats why they call it the "silent killer"

As someone who has experienced extremely high blood pressure, let me tell you what I had:
Visual disturbances
Dizziness
Headaches
and the one that got overlooked:
Hand tremors.
Obviously, biggest concerns are aneurysms, strokes, and MIs, but there's one other "baddie" that can be a result of very high BP:
Heart failure. This can happen to people in their 20s with no evidence of blockages whatsoever. It happened to me. It's happened to countless others. If your blood pressure is VERY high, the usual "years of high BP" leading to CHF doesn't apply. It can be a much shorter period of time.
It's so important to get your blood pressure checked, keep it in line, and as the EMT said in his/her answer, go to the doc if it's extremely high.
