Cold sores (herpes simplex virus 1) is usually transmitted by being kissed by someone who has cold sores. You can also get it by sharing a drink, lipstick, chap stick, even a cigarette with someone who has cold sores.

Genital herpes (herpes simplex virus 2) is typically transmitted by having sex with someone who has genital herpes. Even if the person is not showing any signs or symptoms of the virus they can still spread it. In fact, according to Valtrex, 70% of people with genital herpes got it from their partner when they were showing no signs or symptoms of the virus. Genital herpes can also be spread by oral sex. If someone has cold sores and gives a person oral sex it can cause that person to get genital herpes. I've read 30% of people with genital herpes got it from cold sores.

You're less likely to get genital herpes if a person uses condoms, but even then condoms are not 100% effective. Also, if a person is currently on an outbreak, the sores can appear anywhere in the genital area not just the penis which the condom is covering. If a person has protected sex with someone who is currently having a herpes outbreak it's possible for that person to get genital herpes. Genital herpes can be spread by direct skin to skin contact.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.

The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid?such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

I know you can catch oral herpes if you kiss someone with oral herpes. You can also catch it through oral sex with someone who has oral herpes. Herpes simplex is the herpes virus in the mouth. But, it can be transferred to the bottom and become worse. I guess it would depend on the protection, etc. to know whether you would catch it thru protected sex.

Yes you can get herpes if you kiss someone that has HSV1 (the oral form of herpes) Commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters.
It is always possible that you can get herpes from having unprotected sex. Thats how I got it (long, long story). Even if the person has no symptoms or sores of herpes, it is possible to spread it through any sexual contact. It is possible to spread genital herpes (HSV2) to someone though oral sex, then they would get oral herpes. Always use protection to lessen your risk. Once you get HSV, you will have it for life.
