Automatic Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators are easily implanted just on your upper left chest. They are with many pacemakers, so if you have ever seen a pacemaker under the skin, it will be similar. You should not need to be put to sleep for the procedure.

They do bring a tremendous quality to your life. The Federal Government used to require all recipients to have a support group available. People are not supposed to drive, but most slip and do it anyway once they know how often it may or may not fire. (I would not advise driving.) I have taken care of many patients with these. It makes them nervous at first, but they get over that feeling quickly.

I am assuming at 26 you have cardiac myopathy. The heart will continue to go out of rhythm without the AICD.

They are lifesaving devices for many, many people. I would assume that your doctor would not want you to have an internal cardiac defibrillator unless it was absolutely necessary. You probably don't realize that the quality of your life has declined. With an ICD you will be able to do things that you have not been able to do for years. As far as problems in the future, don't worry. In a few years they will be able to grow complete replacement parts.

I've had an ICD implanted for over 10 years. I'm on my 4th unit. Other then the discomfort of minor surgery, it won't bother you at all except when called on to shock your rhythm back to normal. Then, it will fell like someone kicked you in the chest.

Stay away from Guidant units. They are being sued by just about everyone who's had one of their unit implanted for poor quality control and failure to notify doctors and patients of defects.
