Does it need to be cooked in order to be digestable? Or can I just sprinkle it on salads, soups, etc, right before eating? Thanks -- JP

Two of my favorite dishes are TVP sloppy joes and TVP chili. It's already cooked, but needs to be reconstituted with water, and best with tomato. Sloppy Joes- one cup each reconstituted TVP, chopped onion, and ketchup, plus one tablespoon each chopped garlic, hot sauce, olive oil, and oregano. After the first time, you may want it spicier. Serve over rolls or toast. Chili- Reconstituted TVP, a cup of chopped onion, a drained can of pinto beans, an undrained can of tomatoes. Lots of chili powder. Serve with chips, crackers, or over rice.

TVP MUST be cooked...otherwise, just as real meat products, you can get salmonella poisoning. The best was is to soak it for a few minutes in very warm water and then saute like you would any meat.

It can be cooked in any dish that requires hamburger. It is able to be eaten uncooked, but I wouldn't suggest it. Other uses for TVP are highlighted in The Tightwad Gazzette by Amy Dacyzyn.

Cook it up just like ground meat. Add taco seasoning to get a commercial tasting taco.
Add Worcestershire sauce to get casserole meat. It's probably best in a thick soup so you don't know its there.
