How about if the tongs are currently in use by say the guy in front of you in line?

I was recently chastized for 'not waiting' for the tongs even though the food item I touched WAS the one I took for myself. So I want to know, what is proper etiquette.

or what if the tongs are in use by some very very slow person, like rediculously slow and maybe even talking and just not thinking of sitting them down for the next person?

Some people are just impossibly slow and don't pay attention to the needs of others. However, it is polite to wait for the tongs to become availible and not to use your fingers.

You should have waited for the tongs it just looks bad and the thought of everyone doing that is repulsive!!

Wait until the guy in front of you is finished with the tongs. So impatient these days...

I never wait for tongs if I can easily only touch the one I'm taking.
People are so b*tchy. It's not like you pooped on their food

Yes- PLEASE use the tongs. Even if you did take the one you touched, your bare skin could have grazed the surrounding items and not to say that you are unclean, but many people aren't necessarily as hygienic as we would prefer them to be. That's why I pretty much stay away from the buffet scene as much as possible.
