It sounds like excercise-induced asthma. Go to a pulmonologist or allergy doctor to be tested. You can blow into a machine that will test your upper and lower lung functions. If you do have that asthma, you can find relief with an inhaler that is for fast-acting relief. Good luck!

Yes, you might have asthma. So many people asthma these days.
Ask your doctor if he will prescribe ventolin for you. Then take a hot of it before you do sports.
You could buy a peak flow meter from the pharmacy. Blow into it every day and see if it varies. After you play basketball blow into it and see if it's any different.
If it's much less your lung capacity is reduced and you know you have the asthma. The fact it lasts 3-4 hours kind of points to asthma.
Don't let it go unchecked. You could get a serious attack and even die. You don't know how bad your asthma is. I don't want to scare you and don't think anything like that could happen right now, but the fact it's taking that long to get back to normal is worrisome and a puffer is all you need.
There is also a preventer puffer for those who have to take ventolin more often than 3 or 4 times a week. If you do, you should be on that puffer which is usually Flovent or a simlarly named one.
Oh, and if you have allergies, if they get to be really bad they can lead to asthma too...so if you have environmental allergies, playing on bad air days can cause the symptoms you are having too.

How do you know it doesn't feel like asthma if you have never been diagnosed or had asthma or wheezing? Allergies to pollen and exercise can both cause pulmonary inflammation and respiratory difficulties also called asthma. You should see your doctor. If your symptoms are infrequent then you will probably only need an inhaler like albuterol to use now and then.

Ok... Asthma is narrowing of the small airway passages in your lungs. Its normally caused by inflamation. The inflamation occurs when you do activities, have an allergy, or another medical condition.
Asthma does not hurt. It makes it hard to breathe.
The pain you feel if it is sharp is normal. We get it alot here in LA its due to poor air quality. It will go away and you will be fine.
It also could be a condition called plurisy. That is an inflamation of the serous membranes that surrounds the heart and lungs. Its easy to diagnose because you can actually hear the rubbing of your heart against your lungs and such. Its a trip!
Go see your normal doctor... you will be fine.

You may have asthma or sports induced asthma. You need to go to a DR. f you can not afford one there may be a free medical clinic in your area. You will probably need an inhaler or more. (I have to use 3 different drugs). I have had asthma for years.
