From a bartender's viewpoint - I would just cover the basics.
I would serve, rye, vodka, white rum, and gin. Mixes of course would be pop, orange juice, clamato juice and cranberry juice.
I would serve red and white wine of your choice and 3 or 4 pre-selected beers.
This is very generous and plenty of variety. Of the above, guests can mix drinks, eg, rye and coke, gin and tonic, or make caesars, vodka and cranberry, wine spritzers, etc.

A few questions...do they all drink? What do they usually drink? Is it an open bar throughout the wedding? Will you have bartenders hired so guests don't pour their own drinks? Is it a "formal" reception as opposed to out in the back yard?Assuming the answer is "yes" to all the above and the reception is 4 hours long and 1/3 of the guests are beer/wine drinkers, I would buy 6 cases of 2 types of beer (forget Lite beer), 20 large bottles of wine (14-white, 6 red), 4 gallon bottles each of Gin and Vodka, 2 bottles of dry Vermouth, mixers like OJ, Cranberry Juice, Ginger Ale, 7-up/Sprite, olives, cocktail onions, limes, lemons, seltzer water, Tonic, Bloody mary mix, tons of ice; That should do it! Hey, if you run out, you can always go to the Liquor Store and restock; make sure there are at least a couple of designated drivers or have a "contract" with your local Liquor store to have them deliver anything that's required "last minute"!

Thats a toughie without more detailed info. I'd say Ivy has it close to right, but I wouldn't leave out the whisky drinkers. Get at least 2 fifths each of a decent but not too expensive scotch and bourbon, and a few assorted liqueurs for the shot drinkers.
Here's a few yummy shots that aren't real strong:
Nutty Irishman - 1/2 Irish cream and 1/2 frangelico
Wet P*ssy - 2/3 butternips with a float of Tequila Rose
Butterball - 2/3 butternips with a float of Irish cream
DON'T buy Jagermeister, people get too f'ed up on it.

Make up drink tickets. Give each guest two. That's more responsible on your part than an open bar where they can drink to no end, on your tab.
