In Korea if you do not slurp they take it as an insult. My dad lived there for more than a year and often had dinner with his Korean landlords. They taught him that he should slurp as a sign of respect. I've lived in Japan for 8 years and I've not noticed people slurping their noodles.

Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese do not seem to find it very offending.
I taught myself to eat noodles in Chinatown in New York City by watching the customers in there. I also read up on the cultures. But there's certain eating customs for everyone.

Only place you don't see or hear slurping of noodles are in the resturant in the USA. Most feel it's bad manners here. I don't care though, I slurp noodles myself.

As a Chinese, all I can say is that it's not in the culture of Chinese to make sounds / noise while eating. We have a proverb which goes, "Not to speak while eating, not to talk while sleeping".
If you should ever catch a Chinese slurping noodles, he/she must have forgotten what his/her parents taught him/her or he/she is in a real hurry.
