I was at the dr's this morning and my blood pressure reading was on the high side (135/90), my dr assured me she never goes by just one reading, but I am a bit perplexed as to why my blood pressure would be higher than normal. I am healthy, 27 years old, highly active (run 30 miles a week), eat healthy, healthy weight, and I wasn't nervous at all (my pulse at the time was 58 beat per minute). what can be other causes to high blood pressure? or was this just a fluke?

Your Dr has assured you that everything looks ok but I can understand your concern to want to understand this - and that is good.
What they class as a normal BP reading is 120/80 and there could be many reasons why you are, for this one reading, above that.
- maybe it wasn't a good reading by the person that took it first off (it does happen)
- white-coat reading on your part - even though you said you weren't nervous - sometimes we don't feel it but our bodies respond temporarily
- of course things in your diet that could effect BP - too much salt, your diet (but you say you are eating a good diet), too little potassium can raise your BP,
- you exercise thats good
- stress can raise it
- also - caffeine can raise BP temporaily if you are sensitive to it(don't know if you had a very large strong coffee, tea or soda before going to the doc lol)
- for women oral contraceptives can raise BP sometimes by a small amount
So that is some of the things that can effect BP - but also this was a one time shot for you and it also wasn't that high. A lot of drug stores have BP machines in them where you can test yourself - why not go in once a week if you can and keep a check on yourself to see where you are coming it at. Just do it more than once while you are there - I always get a different reading in those machines. But by all means if you have more concerns speak with your health care provider. Take Care

You can be feeling fine and still show effects of stress. A perfect example is a wedding, it is a happy moment in a persons life but it is also one of the most stress full ones too.
So even though you may not be feeling angry, scared, nervous, etc. You can still have temporary High blood pressure. And Temporary High BP is nothing at all to worry about...

There are other causes of high blood pressure aside from the obvious as having a heart problem. It could be a result by not urinating normally (as a problem coming from kidney or prostate) and this would cause to shoot your blood pressure up. Other tension building causes would also make your blood pressure higher than normal.

In addition to what others stated, if your blood pressure was checked right after you got to the room, that can raise it. 135/90 is not that bad. If it happens 2 more times you need meds.

I have had the dsame condition moost of my life.
Some causes , stress, depression(even of you don't realize it)
Too much salt,( choek what you eat for sodium (even in soft drinks)
Genetics, Not enough exercise, too much exercise.
Your blood pressure is what they call pre hypertension,Most likely can be treated with a simple fluid pill. I only take half, and it works. You can get a gereric and they are not expensive. Wish I could remember the name.

I agree with chapaton. Maybe it's time to take a little break and take some stress off, worrying over it won't help so try to go about your normal life and have some quiet time.
Best of luck

We have been taught that high blood pressure comes from too much salt. Actually it comes from our cells being dehydrated due to lack of water and salt ( the right kind of salt).
