My friends and I have been planning a pirate themed party to go along with the DVD release of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie (yes, I know we're dorks). We're going all out with decorations and costumes. I plan on doing tropical fruity rum drinks, of course. I'm at a bit of a loss for something pirate-y to eat.

The Captain's Famous Jambalaya

"This jambalaya may have been a few places since the bayou, but it's a thick, rich dish that everyone will love! I've experimented with many types of seafood in this recipe, and the flavor and consistency of snapper works the best. Serve with French bread and hot red pepper sauce!"
Original recipe yield: 8 servings.
Prep Time:25 MinutesCook Time:1 Hour 30 MinutesReady In:1 Hour 55 MinutesServings:8 (change)

INGREDIENTS:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons file powder
3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 green onions, chopped
2 large sweet onions, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
3 large tomatoes, peeled and chopped
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon salt
1 bay leaf
2 cups mushroom broth
1 1/2 cups uncooked brown rice
1 pound red snapper fillets, cut into 2 inch pieces

DIRECTIONS:
In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Mix in flour, and whisk constantly 2 to 3 minutes, until a thick paste-like roux has formed.
Stir file powder, garlic, green onions, onions and green bell pepper into the roux. Cook and stir until tender, about 10 minutes. Stir tomatoes into the mixture. Season mixture with black pepper, cayenne pepper, allspice, cloves, salt and bay leaf. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is well blended, 10 to 15 minutes.
Pour in mushroom broth, and mix in rice. Increase amount of broth to cover all ingredients, if necessary. Bring to a boil, and mix in snapper. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 1 hour, or until rice is tender.

Note:

File powder is a seasoning made from the ground, dried leaves of the sassafras tree. It's an integral part of Creole cooking, and is used to thicken and flavor Gumbos and other Creole dishes.

Seafood. maybe some of the imitation crab meat if you don't want to splurge for the real stuff. Shishkabobs, calamari. I created a kick as* Hot Rum Dip that goes awesome with any seafood. Yes. It involves rum. My cousin and I went as Pirates last year for Halloween and we blacked out a few of our teeth. You're probably already doing that but it's just a suggestion and it really topped off our costumes. We won 1st place at three different bars that night!!! Have fun.

Parrot Stew! You don't have to use parrots but you just call it that.

Or make a desert called The Watery Grave with a skeleton figure drowned in dishes of Creme Brulee.

Pick up some chocolate gold coins, candy jewel rings, etc and make a treasure chest.

Any sort of fish dish would work. Crab legs or lobster.

Land-lubber-burgers?

Go for unusual fish dishes, like things with Prawns, Tuna, Anchovies, but of course this will not help if people do not like fish.

Why not go for what Pirates had in their food holds of a ship on long trips like Potatoes, Beans, Pulses, Corn, Yams, Fruit

Spear a wooden skewer through a small piece of paper to make a schooner sail and set it in the middle of a hot dog. Add a few Goldfish crackers and the fearsome pirate cake below.

Turkey or chicken drumsticks served on large platters with fruit and bread, no utensils allowed! Serve seaweed pasta (green linguine), golden nuggets (chicken nuggets), pirates teeth (corn) or swords (breadsticks). Vegetable platters can be created to resemble an island setting, fish shaped crackers could be in the dipping ocean. Red sharks blood punch could be served with or without alcohol or grog in the form of root (or real) beer. Food can be served in coconuts, melons, on large silver platters by wenches or on rough wood tables.

I'm a geek too. I made roasted chicken, sea food, boiled whole potatoes, whole roasted onions, rolls. I made 2 green salads (I highly doubt pirates ate salads but I like salad), fruit and cream tarts, apple and berry cobbler. We all had fun, and plan to do it again when the DVD comes out.

I'd imagine pirates ate a lot of fish. So seafood is a good bet, like fish and chips. Plus it's easy to fix and not terribly expensive.

How about sea food? Lobster, shrimp, crab legs, oysters, or just fish? Make sure though that if you go with sea food, that none of your guests are allergic to sea food.

jerked beef, seafood gumbo spicedjamican grilled chicken.. spanish rice ....fuit salad (mangos pineapple passion fruit,grapefruit,oranges,bannanas add sugar spiced rum and coconut(shredded )
