If so, what kind? I choose vegeterian blend whenever possible but what do regular refried beans have in them?

Check the label! Do not buy beans made with lard (animal fat) They are not vegan! I usually get Rosarita's Fat Free beans (no lard) and they work okay. Have to add a little cumin and chili powder because without the lard and salt they are little flat tasting. Happy bean eating!

Most refried beans are made with lard which is an animal fat. There are some vegetarian refried beans on the market. It usually says right on the front of the can if the beans are the vegetarian variety. It should also say right on the label if the beans are prepared using animal fat or not.

You just need to read the ingredient labels. Some that aren't labelled "vegetarian" are. They will contain no meat, of course, and vegetable oil or shortenings.

What you need to look for is the listing of an animal fat, usually lard. But also look for "tallow" or any other animal fat.

A very few brands contain sausage, but this is usually on front label. To follow any special diet, you need to read ingredient labels."Vegetable soup" for example could contain chicken or beef broth. Some white gravy mixes include chicken fat. Even "vegetarian" may not be enough if you are a vegan or have special religious rules. Hari Krishna followers, for example, do not eat onions or garlic.

As a general rule no.... many restaurants use pre-packaged beans to save on food cost, unless they are "truly authentic" I honestly can't think of any brand that does include a meat product or fat as beans are such a high source of protein to vegetarians... why would they shut themselves out of that niche market? Hopefully this helps and be sure to ask when dining out, any reputable restaurant will provide ingredients and recipes when asked for them.... if they say no, tell them you have a unspecified food allergy.

It depends. In restaurants they usually are cooked with some kind of meat like ham juices or bacon. Ask the waiter. In cans, look on the label--some say lard and that is animal fat. But some specifically say vegetarian and they do not have any animal fat or products.

Some of them that are in cans have pork grease in them. You need to read the labels. If you make the beans yourself, then you can fix them without animal fat.
