People can live days to years on a ventilator.
It depends on how long the rest of their body holds up, or if they are able to come off of the ventilator an breathe by themselves.

There are many reasons for a person using a ventilator. Ventilators can be used for many decades by people who have muscle or nerve paralysis but are otherwise healthy.

If however, the person has been put on the ventilator because of an accident, or because they have advanced lung disease, their life expectancy is greatly decreased generally.

Positive pressure vents generally cause more infections than do negative pressure volume ventilators.

Can live years but their health is almost always in crisis of some kind. In other words it will never be like old times but Christofer Reeve lived 10 years.

It totally depends on what their health status is, other than the fact that they can't breathe on their own. So I guess the answer is forever provided the rest of their body holds up.

depends on their condition and their progress. if a patient progresses very well, then the earlier the patient will be extubated.
some conditions are more likely to be permanent -- like christopher reeve -- so they may need ventilatory assistance permanently.
