The word grits comes from the Old English. "grytt", for "bran", but the Old English "greot" also meant something ground. Some cookbooks refer to grits as hominy because of regional preference for the name. Americans have been using the term "grits" since at least the end of the 18th century.

Ground up corn. When you cook it, it should be almost the consistency of oatmeal. Usually served as breakfast, but some people eat fish and grits also.

The best way to eat it is to put some cheese in the grits, serve it with sausage, ham, or bacon and scrambled eggs. Mix it all together.

A lot of northerners put milk and sugar in it, but I think it tastes nasty that way. For good grits, visit a NC, SC, TN, or GA diner.

Grits can be made from corn or hominy, which is in the corn family. It is made when the corn or hominy is milled. Grits are more common here in the south. I like mine with butter and sugar. A lot of people like their grits to be more savory and serve them with gravy or salt and pepper.

Grits are from corn.

Polenta is basically grits, but made from the whole kernnel of yellow corn.

it's made from corn and apparently it's similar to polenta. I won't try either because creamed corn made me sick, so why would I want to eat mushy, bland, tapioca-looking corn stuff? ew.

why yes, I am a northerner. XD

oh, and hominy is just corn soaked in a lye bath. it's not a vegetable or anything.
