I never eat meat at asain places due to all of the urban myths I've heard. I just recieved an email that made me very happy about that choice. I can forward it to anyone who leaves their email. Do you know anything about alternative meat sources at asian places?

I agree that most of what we eat is not as it seems. The fact is, dead bugs don't bother me, nor does rat feces. I'm not one of those girls that freaks when a fly lands on my food. I know different cultures eat different foods. I asked if people want to know, so they can make informed decisions, then I will send it. I didn't post a link because I'm not good at this and did not want to end up linking people into my mailbox. I will have to send emails tomorrow- I'm at work and this computer is slow and annoying.

Urban myths are called urban myths because they aren't true.

However:

Do you eat beef at "non-Asian" places? Are you sure it's beef and not horse or ox? Have you ever eaten a hamburger? What was it made of? Are you sure?

And more importantly, do you eat bread? Bread is made with flour, and it's no myth that flour is full of insect parts, it is not possible to harvest wheat without catching bugs, too!

This website will help you estimate how many bug parts, rat feces and flith was part of whatever you ate last week, nothing "mythical" about it!

Bon appetit!

Thin Kaboudit raises some very valid points.

I just have this to add to the soup :

Most Asian cuisine focuses on more than just the taste and the standards of food preparation in an Asian restaurant are usually MUCH higher than standards in other restaurants.

If you are more worried about the things they consider "food", i.e. dogs, cats and chicken feet then I have to tell you that those are NOT urban legends BUT
1) This practise is not confined to Asian regions - large areas of Eastern Europe routinely use dogs for both pets AND cuisine. In fact, many of the dog breeds in the WESTERN world were originally bred for their meat.
2) If you disregard the "fact" that "dogs are pets" and accept that cultures differ, dog meat as such is not so bad. Especially when compared to some of the things available in Western countries, eg. tripe/offal and blood sausage. And sheep testicles.
3) Asian restaurants and take-outs do not substitute "other" meat for what you ask for, and in most Western countries they know very well that dogs and cats are considered pets and therefore do not usually have it available on the menus either.

Oh, by the way, cat tastes almost exactly like rabbit... apparently. And dog is very much like very tough mutton.

A lot of the things you heard about Asian food using weird ingredients are urban myths created out of various reasons: competition, ignorance, malice, racial stereotype... Meat of rat, worms, etc are difficult to get hold of and probably more expensive than ordinary meat like pork, beef and chicken. Most people in the restaurant trade value their licence and wouldn't dream of doing things that will damage their reputation and destroy their livelihood. If you are worried about eating meat despite what I have just told you, you could always order tofu, which should be on the menu of most Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian restaurants. Indian restaurants do a lot of pulse dishes catering for the taste of vegetarians.

why don`t u send us a link here so everyone can see. Instead off u posting individual emails. I am asian and a muslim and would like to say the way us muslims prepare meat noone else does. It is more hygienic and clean because islam doesn`t allow us to have murdered meat we have to prepare it in such a way that the animals feel no pain. If a animal is murdered the pain would be hurrendous but when we slaughter animals they die instantly.

just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's true!

and why are you worried about just the asian places? truly, I worry more about some fast food restaurants than I do about asian food.
