Just ignore everyone else's answer. I am Japanese and work as a sushi chef apprentice. Everyday I watch all the Americans making disaster with beautiful Maki I make. I'm tired of people misunderstanding that using chopsticks at the sushi bar is cool or whatever!
1: Sushi is finger food!! Finger food!!Nigiri and Maki are made to those shapes so you can just pick up with your hand.
2: Futo-maki(big rolls) can be bite off. It's the neatest way to eat it.
3: Use chopsticks if you eat Sashimi or Chirashi, and other appatiser items. If you're clumsy, simply ask for a folk and a knife...
Thanks & Enjoy

As a little background, I visited both Japan and China. Meals were interesting and delicious (i.e., snake, dog, sushi, you name it). Asians especially the Chinese consider westerners eating habits barbaric by using a knife and a fork.
There were eight of us that went over on a trade mission. Four of the people had never used chopsticks but they did and with success. It was out of respect or maybe a bit of our ego in that when the waiter or waitress presented each westerner with a knife and fork we turned it down.
Learned to use chopsticks. Have an asian friend show you how to hold them. That's the key. They work just like a crab claw. Once you know how then it is easy too use no matter how big your hands are. I eat rice with them and can pick up small objects with ease.
I'll never forget when I saw a chinese person eat a shelled shrimp. He picked it up with his chopsticks and with his mouth pulled that puppy out of there and placed the shell on his plate. He accomplished this in a tasteful manner. I still don't know how he pulled that off. I had too separate mine with the two chopsticks before going at it.
But too touch one's food with your hand is considered bad form my man.

Yes as long as you wash your hands thoroughly first. And it is polite in their culture to put it all in your mouth - don't bite it in half. Futo Maki is the best one. The hand rolls are a good choice too, Have you ever tried Salmon Skin handrolls?

If you do it with confidence, and you don't make a mess, of course it's alright. But you might want to practice using chopsticks, it's a skill that improves your general manual dexterity, and rest-assured there are folks with bigger, clumsier hands who have mastered them!

Certainly you can eat sushi with your hand, my Japanese friend from Ehime (a city in the south, Sikoku Island) told me that's the best way to eat sushi!
Enjoy food by whatever mean!
