Omg, I would love all the meat eaters here to be put in the jungle with real carnivores and see how they go with THEIR natural self defence mechanisms, no weapons included !!
We are definitely not at the top of the food chain and animals were not put on Earth to eat.
I think you mean no defence mechanism against man when they are so easily bred for exploitation.

I really wanted to stay out of this since it was posted on the wrong section, but here goes.....
#1 before all of your aforementioned comercially raised animals were tampered with by big business....

Chickens could fly (and some still do in short bursts), hogs had tusks and still have extremely sharp teeth, and if I'm not mistaken most cattle have horns, which can be used to gore you to death.

#2 Man was (if you believe this if not that's fine, I just want to be consistent) created in God's likeness, do you honestly think that he would leave a being created to represent him (or her)self on earth without the ability to hunt and gather food, farming being an exponential derrivative of the masses to feed?

All of the DOMESTICATED animals you mention have been cross/in/ and genetically bread to yield the highest profit. Prior to Man's tampering with the process of natural selection, (hunt or gather) all of these animals were quite and in some instances still readily capable of defending themselves.

I can't say that I agree with a lot of the answers here or the rebutles to one side versus the other.... it seems like too many vegan/vegetarians are being downright militant and the people who consume meat are fanning the flames. Neither side is correct, you may hunt or gather in order to exist and no party should infringe on the rights of the other to do so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In fairness, I feel that when one consumes the flesh of an animal, be it poultry, cattle, hog or fish, the person who prepare's it must have the utmost reverence for the product they are working with so that that being shall not have died in vain.

I am a professional chef and respect the animals and products that I work with even if the purveyors can't get them from farmers who feel the same way.

Those are DOMESTICATED animals. And cows can be used for milk and labour... chickens for eggs... pigs were considered "unclean" (not fit to eat) in the Old Testament, so.... God didn't want us to eat them then yet we still had them. Jews and Muslims still don't eat them. Willd boars are one of the most dangerous animals btw.

Also, being a vegetarian isn't about religion. In this day and age we have at our disposal all the nutrients we need (and clothing) without having to kill animals. We should take advantage of it whenever we can as it helps the environment (no rainforests cut down to allow cattle to graze) and world hunger could be wiped out b/c of all the land used to produce grain for ONE cow.

HMMM, chickens have been around for a long time, if they had no defense mechanism sure they would of been extinct along time ago, same goes for pigs and cows. love makes the world go round, god made you, do you have a defence mechanism... "what about sheep, it is'nt fair"

All living organisms have "Defense Mechanisms", right down to the cellular level.
Example: A living cell's defense mechanism is the cell membrane. The fact that other living entities or even environmental effects can penetrate these defenses is simply nature at it's best (or worse), depending on your point of view.

the wild chickens, cows, and pigs DO have defence mechanisms. They are actually quiet dangerous. why do you only see the "defense-less" kind? because the humans overbread those kind because they are easy to deal with and use for food.

I guess you've never lived on a farm, have you? If you had, you would know that they all have defenses. A rooster and a hen can both flog you by using their beaks and talons, I have been kicked more than once by a cow, and knocked down several times. Do you know that if a hog gets a person on the ground by knocking them over, they can and do kill them? They have eaten people, also. Even though we may eat these creatures, they do have defenses. I hope this helps.

Are you kidding me? Have you ever been pecked by a chicken? or head butted by a pig? Or stepped on by a cow?

Chickens can be very mean and bite plus they have talons. Male cows, called bulls, have horns and are hardly defenseless. I believe pigs charge and can bite.

Do a little research for goodness sakes.

They all have defense mechanisms. I worked a farm for years.

I have been kicked and stepped on and stuck with the horns of numerous cows.

Chickens and roosters will attack an bite you with their beaks and large talons.

Pigs have very sharp teeth and will bite if pestered. (Wild pigs are some of the most dangerous animals to hunt.)

They will survive quite nicely left alond, but they are easily tamed for food purposes.
