let us take the more practical approach. here is where you leave the high fat food off and all animal products. a vegetarian diet with nature fats of olives and avocados are better but a diet with animal fat is where the large part of the cholesterol comes from. get some protein from two or three separate sources such as beans and grains grains and nuts or seeds nuts or seeds and beans here are some ideas to get started. beans and grains in the same meal such as: beans of your choice and whole grain rice corn and Lima beans whole wheat bread and peanut butter but until you get the cholesterol levels down keep it light on the nut butters of any kind they do not have cholesterol in them but they can increase the amount of fat in the diet and that increases the chance of triglyceride. to much food left over after the body has stored all it can and then they are left to float in the blood.

Cut out most dairy and all eggs.
If possible, cut out red meat. Chicken and turkey are OK.
Try to eat a lot of fish and olive oil.
And finally... eat vegetables.
I dropped my cholesterol from 230 to 150 (which is well below the average) simply by cutting out eggs and dairy. I never gave up meat :-)
In your husband's case, where his chloresterol is through the roof, he should probably be put on medication as well.
Best of luck.

The majority of a person's cholesterol comes from a person's body. He should be on Liptor or another cholesterol lowering medication.
However you could try these suggestions for lowering cholesterol, without sacrificing taste:
1. Eat a fibre-rich breakfast such as oatmeal, wholegrain muffins and/or fruit. Read cereal box nutrition labels to choose one with five grams or more of fibre per serving. Oat bran and rice bran are the most effective. Honey Nut Cheerios is a very good choice.
2. Switch to whole grains. Choose wholegrain breads, crackers, bagels, muffins, waffles and pancakes.
3. Eat legumes (beans) at least three times a week. Try bean soup, cold bean salad, hummos sandwiches and black bean dip as snacks. Soy protein is especially effective, so be sure to include plenty. Even soya milk, tofu and textured soy protein are good.
4. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. One at breakfast, one veggie (e.g. carrot sticks, tomato slices) and one fruit (e.g. orange sections, apple) at lunch, and one salad and one cooked vegetable at dinner...that makes an easy five.
5. Choose whole fruit, skin included, instead of juice. Juice is the fruit with all the fibre removed.
6. Eat garlic. Cooked or raw garlic both contain compounds that help lower your liver's production of cholesterol.
7. Other good foods include raw onion, salmon, olive oil, almonds, walnuts and avocados (the latter five are all high in fat, but most of it is monounsaturated fat which helps to improve cholesterol).
8. Eat plenty of foods that contain the natural antioxidants: vitamins C and E. Foods rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin E - Red and green peppers, Cantaloupe, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts, Strawberries, Papaya, Almonds, Peanuts, Oranges, Grapefruit juice, Wheatgerm, Soybeans, Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, Wheatgerm oil and Soybean oil
9. Studies show that a little bit of wine or beer helps cholesterol levels. Binge drinking is not effective, but light to moderate drinking through the week is.

A low carb lifestyle usually works wonders for lowering cholesterol levels. You want to eat "good" fats like salmon and walnuts.
