Yes it is. Usually people will have their first outbreak 2-20 days after being infected, but for some it can take months or even years.
I personally had my first outbreak about 3 weeks after I contracted the virus. I've talked to people though who didn't have symptoms for years and years and never knew they had herpes.
And, having unprotected sex is one of the tricky things about having genital herpes. If a person with genital herpes gets into a relationship with someone who doesn't have the virus and then later plan on having a child with them, you obviously have to stop using condoms. This is a major risk for the other person. Usually if one person has genital herpes the other person eventually gets it. There are rare cases though of people who have been together 10 or more years. One person has the virus and the other doesn't.

It depends, Where the herpes it and which virus it it is. HSV-1 usually invades the mouth causing a cold sore, however it can occur genitally, when it does the intial outbreak will usually yield some kind of symptoms. Swollen gland in the groind, ache in leg or buttocks for no reason, fatique, and maybe even a slight fever. You would have some itching a irritation in your lower region. Recurrences are different. They can, especially if HSV-1 be so minor that you may not know and can spread through asymtomatic shedding. Bottom line, get a blood test find out if you have hsv-1 or hsv-2. Because you probably don't. Why do you think you have it anyway. And if you do absolutely sex is not over. Listen, don't get freaked out get some more info. Talk to a doctor!

Herpes is known for lying dormant in the body for years. In other words, yes, you can most definitely have herpes without symptoms, for many years actually.

Some people are just carriers; they never experience the symptoms of the disease.
They have medications which make the virus less active, allowing for protected sex, with less of a chance for infecting someone.
