The US Food and Drug Administration divides food colorants into two categories:

Certifiable Color Additives which are derived from petroleum distillates or coal tars and are essentially synthetic chemicals created in laboratories. These are often referred to as "artificial" colors.

Exempt Color Additives are derived from plant, animal or mineral sources which have been processed in some way. The layman might call these "natural" colors because of their origins, though it's likely they've come out of a factory or chemical plant just like certifiable colors.

Some dye is made from beetles, it's true. But not all of it is. There are plenty of dyes made from petrochemicals, but they cause cancer, so... Which do you want to hurt, yourself or the beetles? Just stay away from all dyes.

They don't dye red meat, by the way; they gas it with carbon monoxide. It's a biochemical reaction that makes it red, not a dye.

Yes it is.

And by the way, don't eat wheat because they kill rabbits with the tractors they use to harvest it.
*Don't wear cotton because they use pesticides to kill the boll weevils that prey on the cotton plants.
*Don't wear silk because it really does come from worms that are bred and enslaved to make silk.
*Don't use electricity that comes from hydroelectric plants because they dam rivers that fish live in to make it, damaging their habitat.
*Don't drink water because to make it suitable for humans they kill all the microorganisms that live in it.
*Don't drive because oil companies produce waste that that pollutes waterways and kills fish and animals who drink it and rubber companies kill squirrels and mice when they tap the rubber trees.

Hope I could be of help.
