How to recognise real saffron?

Hi there,
I picked up some saffron while traveling last week. I about a handful for 10$ canadian. It's the stringy kind, but I'm worried if it might be fake. How can I tell if it's fake, and how can I tell if I've been ripped off.

Take one or two strands and put it in hot water. If it is really good saffron it will give a lovely dark red color in a few minutesand the aroma of the water will be heavenly too.

It's best to buy the saffron strands, not powder as that is easily faked - the strands are usually a deep reddish colour and if you put just a few in boiling water a lovely golden yellow colour leaks out, also they have a distinctive smell.
Saffron rice has a delicious taste.

Genuine ‘Mancha’ Saffron filaments ( Stigma’s) should mostly be joined in three’s at the end of a portion of the style which is white/yellow in colour. The filaments should be mostly between two to four cm long, must be longer than the style, and their colour vibrant red, never dark.

Apart from the above , it is important to remember that if you immerse dyed imitation so-called "saffron" in water or milk, it will colour the water or milk immediately. This is actually the dye coming off quickly. Genuine saffron like SAFINTER & TAJ-MAHAL is to be soaked in warm milk or water for few minutes, before the stronger colour, flavour and aroma start emerging.

A "handful" for 10 dollars is too cheap to be real

True saffron costs about 3,600 euros per kilo (that would make it aproximately 2,000 US dollars per pound), and is sold in small containers by gram weights. The sizes usually vary from half a gram to 25 grams...
The best quality saffron comes from Spain, followed by France and Italy, then Turkey and certain other middle eastern countries (these are considered of lesser quality).

A friend of mine got ripped off with phony saffron threads from Pakistan. Turned out to be some similarly stringy plant matter dyed red.

When you soak saffron in hot water, you should smell a wonderful saffron-y aroma, and the liquid should be an orangey color.

My friend's fake saffron, soaked in hot water, didn't smell of anything, turned the water red, and turned her Milanese risotto pink :P
