my son has many problems with his heart, one of them is a small vsd, and he has not had surgery yet. most doctors will not consider surgery until there is a need. heart surgery is a major thing no matter how small the problem and most won't do it without there being a problem. there is still a lot of time for it to close. go play with your baby and enjoy having a health child.

HI there,
I was born with a large VSD(ventricular septal defect) which did not need surgury. I had to see the cardiology every 6 months when I was a baby, and then yearly after that. The hole closed on its own, but slowly, it was resolved when I turned 18. The precautions my parents had to take was, when I was little if I got a fever for more than 24hours, I was to be brought in right away, and fevers tended to run higher. A few times I hallucinated from the fevers. I got alot of tonsillitus and broncitits as a child. ALso, medication (antibiotics) was needed before every dental appointment. As far as my life went, it never bothered my too much, however I wasn't able to run alot, and would becoume a little short of breath on exurtion. I played ringette and hockey, which was fine, I just did shorter shifts, and the cardiologist told me that it was great excersise for my heart. My appointments consisted of a stress test, running on the treadmil, and and echo. All should be well, and I hope is of comfort to hear from someone who has had a healthy life with the same condition. I am now almost 27.

VSD is ventricular septal defect. There is a 5.3mm hole in the wall between two ventricles (left and right) and it permits blood from the more powerful left to go to the right. To accommodate more work, the left chambers (atrium and ventricle) have compensated and dilated. A 5.3mm hole in a 9-month old is not really small. It may not close on its own, short of some miracle or surgery. The doctor may just be buying time for the right opportunity to recommend surgery.

This is a good site for you to learn in detail what is going on with your childs heart. I did some research after reading your question and this site gives alot of very good information. I also found a cardiology site where you can ask questions to a cardiologist..it is called Med Help International and it is a not-for-profit organization that is there to help..http://www.medhelp.org/perl6/cardio/archive/14367.html

I have 3 medical degrees but I wouldnt attempt to answer your question myself. If your not sure that your Dr is doing the right thing get a 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th opinion from other cardiologists, its your child heart and it is best left to the professionals

I think the surgeons are waiting until she is older to close the defect. It is putting a strain on the right ventricle, and will not close on its own.
