Usually a person will have their first outbreak any where from 2-20 days after contracting the virus. Everyone is different though, for some it may take months and others even years. I personally got my first outbreak about 3 weeks after contracting genital herpes. I've talked to a few people though who didn't have their first outbreak for years.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

Not necessarily. The herpers virus can lay dormant in your system for a long time. Usually your first break out occurs when your immune system is under stress. But than again you might never have an out break. But you still can infect others.
