My 12 year old son has Vulvar Pumlonary Stinosis and is on a weight lifting restriction now but may have a running restriction next year. Today, the gym teacher called and said my son looked distressed while running a mile. So, he had made him walk the rest of the way. My son, angry, sat on the bleachers and cried after the run was over.

The teacher explained to me that they will be doing a lot of cardio this year and suggested a heart rate monitor. The teacher feels bad and understands that my son does not want to be "different", but he is scared and so am I. My son just wants to be like the other kids.

You really wouldn't know there is anything wrong with him by looking at him. He is the most normal kid and he wants everyone to continue to see him that way.

Do you have any suggestions?

i suggest you talk to your son and let him understand his condition. a person with a heart problem should always look out for any activites that could cause a strain in the heart and doing a lot of cardio in gym class can worsen his condition. i know he feels bad that he cannot engage in normal activites, but what can we do? we cannot let him do those activites as normally as the other kids do.

talk to your doctor first about the activities they are required to do in school. maybe your doctor can talk to your child as well and explain him his condition. hopefully he will take the doctor's advise seriously since it was given by somebody who's professional. if possible, maybe your son can engage in another gym class which will be less strenous to his heart.

at this point, try to think which is more important -- your son's self-esteem or his health?

I would think that if his medical condition was documented that that would exempt him from having to take a gym class period. Check into this by removing him from it he may not have to feel not normal by sitting out.

He has no business in a gym class. Get him an extra study hall.
