I have also been diagnosed with Genital herpes, you cannot have unprotected sex even if you aren't having an outbreak there is still a risk of transmitting it, also you can give oral sex but someone is able to get the herpes if they give you oral if they do just be fair to them and tell them what you have and tell them what they do from there is up to them, like someone else has mentioned if you plan on having a long-term to marriage relationship and the person is aware of the herpes then they will almost always be fine with having unprotected sex as long as you guys will be together.

I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

You can do everything sexual you used to do, you just have to take a few extra little precautions.

For just normal vaginal and anal sex you should always wear a condom. This still isn't 100%, but it is the best thing in preventing the spread of genital herpes (other than abstinence of course). Also, if you can, get on Valtrex, it's the only medication for genital herpes proven to help prevent the spread of it. (There are other medication, for example, I am on acyclovir, but this does not prevent the spread of genital herpes).

As for oral sex, still a good idea to use a condom or dental dam. If someone were to give you oral sex it is possible for them to develop cold sores in or by their mouth. Herpes simplex virus 2 (genital herpes) can also cause cold sores.

Unprotected sex is not a good idea unless your partner has herpes or you are in a monogamous relationship and your partner is aware that they will probably get the virus (this is what happened with me and my fiance). It only takes one time using unprotected sex to get genital herpes (that's how I got it over 5 years ago).

If you plan on having a baby in the future (if you don't have one already) you are more likely to transmit the virus. Since you obviously need to have unprotected sex to try and conceive, it's very likely to pass the virus at that time.

Don't worry with time you will get through this! Good luck!

I was diagnosed w/ GH two weeks after I married for the second time (go figure on who gave it to me)!!! Now have been married 20 years. Would not advise Oral sex unless you want mouth sores and no unprotected sex. I am 48 and periods have pretty much quit, but during period time, my GH was very active so we just did not do anything. It can be spread even if you don't have a what we call a "flare up". There are meds for it, but they are R/X from your Dr. Does not get rid of it, just lets you live life again w/ out the PAIN

No unprotected sex of any kind. I have lived with this disease for over 25 years. When you have had it for a while and see how it reacts with you, you may be able to have relations unprotected with your life mate if he/she is aware and ready to take the risk. But remember, it can be spread without your having an outbreak, so be fair to others. It is not easy to tell someone you have it, but if they care and are willing to understand that you must use protection, then you have found a good person.

In my opinion, you shouldn't do anything that is unprotected. If I were you I wouldn't wanna take the chance of spreading it to others. Even if you don't have an out break you can still spread it!
