im a respiratory specialist, and one thing you should never do is the first answer above -- breathing through a bag -- because this will WORSEN the asthma attack. breathing through a bag is only for people who are hyperventilating. reason why? when somebody's having an asthma attack, they breathe in, oxygen is converted to carbon dioxide, but because of constriction of the bronchioles, not all those carbon dioxide is exhaled out -- and they are trapped in the lungs -- very bad. this makes the blood ph very acidic. for somebody who's hyperventilating, they don't have a lung problem, so when they breathe in a lot -- and the CO2 levels in the blood goes down -- which can make the blood ph basic (base). so never ever ask an asthmatic patient to breathe in a bag.
first of all, the person with asthma should always bring his/her inhaler with him/her AT ALL TIMES. this is for emergencies when they have an asthma attack. if let's say you're in school, go to the campus nurse -- and they should have some medications for nebulizer therapy in stock over there.
second, you should keep the person away from the allergen that's triggering his/her asthma. example, he/she is allergic to pet dander -- if there is a cat or a dog in the house, take the person away from them
i don't think any hospital would be miles away... that would be 3rd option -- to bring her to a hospital for nebulizer therapy.

Get a doctor to prescribe an Inhaler for your friend and make sure that this person always carries the inhaler on him/her.
Most of the attacks if given the med on time will subside in half hour! ASk the doctor also to educate you to this disease and how to prevent it and what are the things you should do if your friend gets an attack inspite of all the precautions. I know there are times when no hospital is nearby and you get desperate to help! So good luck
My Brother, Mom and dad are all Asthma patients For my brother just keeping away from the source of these attacks keeps him healthy, my mother takes her meds once she gets an attack and so does my fahter! but everyone has a inhaler nearby just incase!

I feel your pain. I've had asthma for 14 years now and have seen several doctors. The truth is, there is no known cure for asthma at the moment. But the symptoms can be prevented. It really depends on what causes your brother's asthma. Mine is usually dust and hot weather. But I think the universal method is using the control inhaler.
I cured my Asthma the natural way?

It's a good idea to keep an "Inhaler" among your group of friends.
Keep in mind "Swimming " can bring on an asthma attack in even
people that did not have one for years.
Ask at the drug store for a general purpose asthma inhaler.

If your friend is an asthmatic they should always carry with them an inhaler, just for emergencies like you had bringing her to the hospital was the right thing. You can try to get them to slow their breathing down by doing it with them, but it's hard because by now they are panicking. Like I said they should know enough about their condition to carry their necessary inhaler.People can actually die from an attack when their airway closes up completely. I hope they"ll now have inhaler at all times.

Anyone who has any medical condition, whether it is asthma, diabetes or any other problem that could create a life threatening situation needs to be responsible and have suitable medication available at all times to avert any problems.
They should also make the people they are with aware of their condition and how to treat an attack should it occur.
A friend of mine was playing golf with a person who was allergic to bees when he was stung and hadn't informed his partner of his condition.
Fortunately he had suitable medication and was able to help himself before the full affect of the sting would have rendered him unable to act and possibly result in death.

your friend needs to always have an inhaler on them. my girl friend has asthma and i always make sure she has one on her. if your friend has allergies keep them away from whatever they are allergic to. allergies can trigger asthma attacks. if they dont have an inhaler and your not near a hospital then what you do is have them sit down(sitting up, dont let them lay down) try to get them to relax and keep them from panicing. have them breathe with you. breathe deeply and slowliy and continue to tell them to breathe with you. tell them even if it hurts and no matter how hard it is or how much it hurts that they need to try as hard as they can to keep breathing with you. make sure you dont panic. make sure your calm. if you panic they will. if you seem scared they'll be scared. if you can keep them calm and keep them breathing with you. you have a good chance that the attack will pass. if your anywhere near hot water having them breathe in the steam may also help. there is alsoo a perscription that your friend can take. i thinks its called advair. taking it everyday will cut down on the likelyhood of and attack.
PS vigerous swimming or any swimming that is tiring for your friend can also trigger an attack
