No, I lost a lot of weight when I stopped being a vegetarian. I've noticed with some people who don't eat red meat, they get terrible sugar cravings, and eat a lot of sweet things. Since I started eating meat, I don't eat sugar at all, and don't miss it.

Just because people are vegetarians doesn't necessarily mean they eat a lot of vegetables. It means they don't eat meat. They can eat calorie-laden cheeses, candy, etc.

As for the person in question, there could be various reasons why they're chunky (e.g. thyroid issues). The most common reason why someone is chunky: They take in more calories than they use up via physical activity. That's true for most everyone, vegetarian or not.

Weight gain or loss is a pretty simple concept. If you consume more calories than you burn you will gain weight and if you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. Your chunky vegetarian friend is simply consuming more calories than required to maintain her weight at her current level of activity. Maybe she eats healthy but is inactive or maybe she's just eating too much, period. Note that vegetarianism doesn't automatically mean one consumes a healthy, vegetable and fruit-rich diet. Potato chips and beer are vegetarian, but if you sit on the couch all day eating nothing but potato chips and beer, you'll be fat and unhealthy.

There are many contributing factors:
1) High intake of food, even vegetarian ones, would not be helpful for weight management.
2) Vegetarian food with too much oil and frying may not be more healthy than a healthy balance diet.
3) Inactive lifestyle and lack of exercise contribute significantly to weight problem.

Vegetarians eat more then just vegetables first of all. There are many foods that can be considered vegetarian but if they are eaten too much, weight can be gained. White Bread, white pasta, white rice are all simple carbs and can pack on the lbs.
Alot of snack foods are veg friendly but not waist friendly (chips, fried foods etc)

Vegetarians eat a lot of grains and fruits, moreso than meat eaters. Grains and fruits have a lot of carbohydrates, which turn to fat.

Meateaters eat meat which provides protein. A small amount of pure protein will make the stomach feel full, so meateaters don't eat the high carb foods.

Not if they don't exercise or eat too much fatty things like coconut milk! I am a vegetarian and am not slim by any means because I used to drink 20 beers a day and they were full of fattening calories.

because someone is a vegetarian doesn't mean that they have healthy eating habits. They can still load up on many carbs which is the main cause of people gaining weight.

either they haven't been vegetarian for very long or it has more to do with their lifestyle than their diet. they may have big parents or relatives, have a health problem or not get enough exercise. losing weight is not only about changing your diet, but about changing your lifestyle as well. being a vegetarian is a good start, but you may have to make other changes too.
