I am a type 2 Diabetic. It was caught early enough to where I am not on medication and the disease is being treated by exercise and eating the right combination of low carb foods. It's been about 4 years now and so far so good. However; someone told me that no matter how hard a type 2 Diabetic works at keeping the disease under control, that the pancreas completely wears itself out over time and that all type 2 Diabetics eventually become type 1's. Is this true?

No, you can't "Become" a type one diabetic. You can be an insulin dependent type 2, but type one is juvenile diabetes, type 2 is adult onset diabetes. You can't go from one to the other.

No, this is not true. In type one diabetes the autoimmune system turns on the beta cells and destroys the body's ability to produce insulin. Type two diabetes usually is caused when the body cannot properly use the insulin it produces. By reducing your carb intake and increasing your exercise, you reduce the amount of insulin your body requires so that in many cases such as yours, no medication is necessary. Diet and exercise also helps those that are insulin dependent to better regulate glucose. You may need to take pills at some point down the road to reduce your insulin resistance, but with proper exercise and nutrition the majority of type two diabetics do not require insulin. Some will, but over all only a small percentage of diabetics require insulin therapy.

My doctor told me that it would be several years, if at all if I were to become an insulin dependent diabetic. No, you do not turn into a type 1, many type 2 diabetics end up taking insulin because their pills do not work for them, or they simply do not take care of themselves while on the pills.

Type II doesnt become type 1. It may worsen to the point you need insulin, but that doesnt make it type 1.
