It depends. Herpes is contagious *some* of the time. And *some* types of herpes are more contagious than others. But how do you know when? Talk to the person you wanna kiss, and be more aware.

You're boyfriend's wrong. He either doesn't know, or he doesn't care. Whichever it is, you are at risk. He should always wear a condom to protect you from getting it. Here's an article that should clear it up for you.

When Is Herpes Most Likely To Be Spread?
Herpes is most easily spread when a sore is present, but, it is also often spread at other times too. Some people notice itching, tingling or other sensations before they see anything on their skin. These are called "Prodromal Symptoms" and they warn that virus may be present on the skin. Herpes is most likely to be spread from the time these first symptoms are noticed until the area is completely healed and the skin looks normal again. Sexual contact (oral, vaginal, or anal) is very risky during this time.

Can Herpes Be Transmitted Without Symptoms?

Yes! Sometimes those who know they are infected spread the virus between outbreaks, when no signs or symptoms are present. This is called "Asymptomatic Transmission."
Research also shows that herpes simplex infections are often spread by people who don't know they are infected. These people may have symptoms so mild they don't notice them at all or else don't recognize them as herpes. Many genital herpes infections are spread from persons who are asymptomatic "Shedders" of the virus.

Which herpes are you thinking of?
Herpes1- cold sores or genital- herpes 1 and 2?
kissing will transmit both herpes1 and herpes2.

Herpes Simplex

Herpes simplex virus causes a skin infection that is recurrent and cannot be permanently cured. The virus is of two types commonly referred to as HSV1 and HSV2. Herpes causes blisters and sores. After an initial attack, it may recur again after some months or years. Anybody can get this infection and it spreads by body contact. Herpes simplex virus remains dormant in the body forever and flares up for some reasons. Herpes virus causes two kinds of infections- oral herpes also called as cold sores or fever blisters and genital herpes.

As this infection is fairly widespread, especially in sexually active individuals, it is important that you understand more about it and know how to prevent it. The common sites that get affected are lips (cold sores) and genital area (genital herpes). Both the viruses can affect lips and genital areas. But virus type 2 rarely causes active sores in the oral area while virus type 1 can cause herpes in the genital area. People carry many misconceptions about herpes. It is not okay to kiss someone who has open herpes sores. Herpes is very communicatable and you should avoid contact with this person until you have talked to your doctor or a nurse to find out about the illness. It is not curable but can be treated.

yes you can kiss someone with herpes, you can even have sex with them as long as they are not having an out break. Go for it and have fun. If his is the kind that is not contagious then you have nothing to worry about. you can even have sex with no problems.

if you kiss someone w/ an active herpes infection of the lip...you more than likely will get it. keep in mind that the strain that is on your lip is a different strain than you can get on your genitals.
