One of my best friends has developed neuropathy from problems stemming from diabetes. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist.
Can massage help him, or slow the progression of the disease? I want to do whatever I can to help him.

Unfortunately massage has never been shown to help with diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy develops due to chronic damage to nerve endings because of poor control of blood sugar. The best way to slow the progression of the disease is to control his blood sugars.

walking is good, light massage won't hurt, a good range of motion for the feet is:
lay down on bed and with each foot, have him move his foot to make letters, a to z [by the time you complete this the numbness should have stopped.] do with each foot and as often as needed

Massage is not going to help him. Careful listening to his complaints, explanation and reassurance, treatment targeted at dominant symptoms, and pain responds at medication at bed time.

My opinion is that if his doctor gives him clearance to have massage therapy, and it helps him, more power to you! Whatever you decide, be sure his doc is aware of it. Offhand, I can't see that it would hurt.
